Projo SoxTalk with McAdam: A depressing series; look out next time

Just back from New York, Sean McAdam joins us for today's edition of projo SoxTalk. Click here to listen to the full audio file. The topics: the two big problems about this week; the Yankees' late-season dominance of the Red Sox; Joba Chamberlain vs. Kevin Youkilis; the reversed call on the double play in the seventh inning; the always disappointing J.D. Drew; and an encouraging start from Curt Schilling.

Following are some excerpts from Sean's comments.

On the sweep: "The Red Sox know that the Yankees would be pretty formidable in October, and that's half of the problem of what happened the last three days. Not only did the Red Sox not pull away and wrap up the division, but they had an opportunity to really damage the Yankees' playoff hopes ... and they failed to do that."

On the Chamberlain incident: "I think there's definitealy some carryover effect there. ... A number of [Red Sox] players in the clubhouse were talking about, 'There's still three games left,' and 'This is to be continued,' and 'We'll revisit this.' And for whatever reason, Youkilis seems to be in the middle of this all the time. You remember that he got buzzed by Scott Proctor [earlier this season], and yesterday for reasons no one can quite figure out he was the target of Joba Chamberlain."

On Drew's awful series: "You'd be hard-pressed to remember three games in which Drew had worse at-bats. I think there was one single in the first game that was hard hit from Drew, and that was about it. Everything else was the sort of rollover groundball to the right side, or in yesterday's case the groundball to the left side that started the infamous double play [involving Youkilis being called safe, then out]. ... For Drew not to be able to come through and not fill the void [left by Manny Ramirez's absence] is just one more series of disappointments in what has been an always disappointing first seaosn in Boston."

Then if he agrees that it has been a disappointing season then may I recommend that he give back all of the payroll that he has obtained under fraudelent pretenses!!!! He is a bum and I doubt that they even need or want him in Pawtucket!!!

Why is it, ok for Dice-K to hit A-rod, but a rookie hits the back stop and Red Sox nation wants his head. You started it, but if you want to have people with fast balls hitting people you loose.

J.D. DREW HAS TO BE ONE OF THE WORST DEALS MADE
BY THIS FRANCHISE. AS STATED IN PREVIOUS EMAILS,
DREW SHOULD GO TO THE NL WHERE HE MAY BE ABLE
TO HIT THE PITCHING IN THAT LEAGUE. HE TREATS
THOSE (NON)AT BATS LIKE JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE
OFFICE. IT APPEARS THAT WE FANS HURT MORE THAN
THE PLAYERS WHEN THE SOX LOSE.................
DREW, CORA, WILY MO...............BYE BYE....

ED VITA | August 31, 2007 1:09 PM link

To the average fan, the Drew pick-up looked good. Trot was often hurt and missed significant stretches of games during the season. Drew's stats looked more than adequate to fill the right field void. It seemed like a Drew for Trot swap was a plus for the Sox. Then word spread of Drew's frequent injuries and missed games. The swap didn't look as good. Now we see that Drew is a sham, a fake, a ball player dazed by the bright light of Fenway. Why didn't we go after Abreu last year if we had no intention of keeping Nixon?

DREW SHOULD BE SAT DOWN. WHETHER IT'S PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, OR PERSONAL PROBLEMS AT PLAY, IT NO LONGER MATTERS - THIS GUY NEEDS A BREAK TO CLEAR HIS BODY AND MIND. HE STANDS AT THE PLATE LOOKING LIKE HE'S WAITING FOR THE SHOE TO DROP. THEIR IS NO CONFIDENCE IN HIS APPEARANCE OR SWING. SIT HIM OUT FOR BALTIMORE. BRING SOMEONE UP FROM PAWTUCKET - COULD THAT PLAYER POSSIBLY DO WORSE THAN DREW AT THIS TIME?

PAUL | August 31, 2007 4:29 PM link

Jim...There is a difference between throwing a 90 mph fastball at someones ribs and throwing 97-98 at someones head. That could be a career ending situation right there. Red Sox nation should want your head for making such a stupid remark
