LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Highlights from the first day of baseball's winter meetings . . .
-- The Manny Ramirez market appears to have tapered off. The chances of the Red Sox pulling off a trade involving Ramirez have probably lessened from what they were a week ago.
-- There's still a question over whether the Sox have spoken to the Dodgers, who have several propsects (James Loney, Matt Kemp, Jonathan Broxton) that interest Boston.
-- The Sox have not yet spoken to the Angels, another team thought to be a potential Ramirez suitor.
-- Seeking to fill their hole as closer, the Sox approached the Brewers today about reliever Derrick Turnbow. Milwaukee, however, told them that Turnbow wasn't available.
-- Still no announcement on the signing of J.D. Drew, even though it was thought it might be announced today. Drew's signing could be held up pending a physical.
-- The Julio Lugo market currently consists of three teams: The Red Sox (who want him as a shortstop), the Mets (who want him as a second baseman) and the Cubs (who want him as a center fielder). The Sox' interest could lessen if the bidding gets too high.

I would rather the Red Sox pursue Octavio Dotel/Keith Foulke (and preferably Eric Gagne) than take on someone like Turnbow.
Ideally, the Anaheim package which could consist of a combination of Shields, Santana, Wood, Kendrick, or Aybar would be as appealing or more appealing than the Dodgers rumored package.
