Red Sox send Johnson way down to Single-A

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Red Sox righthander Jason Johnson, struggling in the majors and needing a place to pitch during the All-Star break, was optioned all the way to Single-A.

Also Monday, Boston hired former Kansas City Royals general manager Allard Baird as a special assignment scout. Baird spent 18 years with the Royals, serving as GM from 2000-06.

Johnson will start on Wednesday for the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolina League. Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland are off Tuesday and Wednesday because of their leagues' all-star breaks.

No one was immediately activated to replace Johnson on the Red Sox roster.

Johnson is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in two starts for Boston since being acquired from Cleveland on June 21. His combined numbers with the Indians and Red Sox are 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 14 starts.

In another move, the Red Sox agreed to terms with two draft picks, both righthanded pitchers: Bryce Cox (third round) and Brian Steinocher (21st round).
