Epstein: Sox disappointed, but proud, to stand pat

Despite having what he described as ''countless, countless, countless opportunities'' to make a trade prior to today's 4 p.m. trade deadline, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said none of the potential deals they could have made would have benefitted the team in the long term. And, thus, the Sox wound up standing pat and not making a trade.

''We came close on a lot of things, but that's the nature of these deals,'' Epstein said at a 5 p.m. press conference at Fenway Park. ''It's pretty easy to come close, pretty hard to find something that works for both teams.''

Epstein said the Sox were ''most aggressive for quality starting pitching, and very little quality starting pitching changed hands.

''It wasn't for lack of effort,'' he said. ''We came very close to a couple of very high caliber starters.''

What held the Sox back was their determination not to trade off their young talent -- such as pitchers Jon Lester, Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen off the major-league roster, and prospects such as Pawtucket's Dustin Pedroia and Portland's Edgar Martinez -- and kill the team's long-term plan to build from within.

''We have a long-term plan,'' Epstein said, ''and as much as we desperately wanted to do something to help our big-league team, it would have been shortsighted to sacrifice the long-term plan to incrementally increase our chances this year. We were asked over and over again for a lot of good young players who are part of our long-term plan, and it just wasn't worth it.''

Still, Epstein freely admitted it hurt not to make a trade.

''It's very disappointing,'' he said. ''We had a lot of people in the front office and lots of scouts in the field trying to get something done . . . but, again, in the end you have to do a balancing act. Is it worth sacrificing a high piece of your future for an incremetnal improvement over the next two months?

''I'm proud of the process and proud of the result. We didn't want to do something emotional, reactive and shortsighted, that would lead to us doing something we regret that would be detrimental to the franchise.''

The Yankees were very active, acquiring outfielder Bobby Abreu, pitcher Cory Lidle and first baseman/outfielder Craig Wilson, but Epstein said the Sox weren't tempted to make a deal in response to the Yanks.

''Not for one sceond,'' he said. ''Our approach to the Yankees is to respect them, assume they're going to win 100 games every year, and forget about them until October . . . To scrap that approach, to all of a sudden get emotional or reactive, would be to throw out the window everything we believe in.''

One hour to go . . .

With the 4 p.m. trade deadline looming, some quick hits on Red Sox trade rumors . . .

-- In the last 90 minutes, a Kip Wells-to-Boston rumor took fire in virtually every corner of the Internet. However, a baseball source says the deal is ''not close''.

-- A high-ranked baseball insider said the Sox were negotiating a contract extension with the agents for Julio Lugo, indicating a deal with the Devil Rays might be close. But the St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin, in his blog, says He is not going to Boston, at least not as part of rumored three- and four-way deals that were flying around Fenway Park and the Internet Sunday night.

Red Sox lose in Oakland

The Red Sox' bats, which had produced 28 runs in the last three games, were held in check this afternoon by Oakland pitcher Dan Haren. The Athletics won today's game, 5-1, to avoid a Boston sweep.

The Red Sox finished their West Coast swing with a 3-3 record, and will now return to Fenway to face the Los Angeles Angels in a series that begins Friday.

Frank Thomas hit two home runs, both of them off Red Sox starter Kyle Snyder, to pace the Oakland offense.

Boston managed just four hits. Haren went seven innings for the A's, giving up the Red Sox' only run. Kiko Calero and Huston Street each pitched a perfect inning to close out the game.

PawSox win; Red Sox about to get started

The Pawtucket Red Sox got off to an early lead and held on to beat the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-5, in a matinee game today at Toledo. First baseman Jeff Bailey paced the PawSox attack with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Catcher Corky Miller contributed a solo home run.

Abe Alvarez started for Pawtucket and pitched four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Staked to a 5-0 lead, Alvarez surrendered three runs in the inning on two homers by the Mud Hens, who are the Triple A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

Toledo drew to within 6-5 by scoring two runs in the eighth inning off Pawtucket reliever Barry Hertzler. But Javier Lopez got the final six outs of the game to pick up his 15th save. Alvarez got the win to move his record to 6-7.

The win moved Pawtucket to 53-51 on the season, 6 1/2 games behind first-place Rochester.

Out in Oakland, the Boston Red Sox are set to start their series finale with the Athletics. Dan Haren will toe the mound for Oakland at 3:35, with Kyle Snyder going for Boston.

Wakefield has broken rib, on DL for at least 3 weeks

BOSTON -- Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has a broken rib and is expected to spend at least three weeks on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona said today.

Francona said Wakefield doesn't remember how he injured himself. It might have been from sleeping on it wrong.

"He's actually been pitching with pain in his ribs for about a month or six weeks," Francona said the Red Sox played Texas. "The DL is a definite."

The AL East-leading Red Sox did not announce a starter to take Wakefield's place for Saturday's game at Seattle.

Sox sign Beckett to three-year extension

Moments after he had pitched eight shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals this afternoon, the Red Sox announced that they had reached agreement with Josh Beckett on a three-year contract extension through 2009, with a club/vesting option for 2010.

''We think Josh is going to be a very, very good pitcher,'' general manager Theo Epstein said of the 26-year-old Beckett, who improved his record to 12-5 with today's victory and lowered his earned-run average to 4.78.

''This is where I want to play,'' said Beckett.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

This marks the 1st time that a major league team has played 19-plus innings in one game and 11-plus innings in the next game since 1989, when the Dodgers lost at Houston in 22 innings on June 3 and in 13 innings on June 4 (Research by Elias Sports Bureau)…The last time it happened to the Red Sox was in 1967, when Boston lost in 20 innings on August 29 and won in 11 innings on August 30, both at Yankee Stadium.

Boston leads the majors with a .990 fielding percentage and with 31 errors, have 9 fewer miscues than any other big league team (Seattle)…Since research is 1st available in 1960, it is the fewest errors by any team through July 13.

The Red Sox have finished with a .500-or-better record at home against the Athletics in 14 of the last 15 seasons, all but 2003 (1-2) . . . The Red Sox are 9-3-1 in the last 13 season series with Oakland, going 86-50 vs. the A’s since the start of the 1993 season (48-23 at Fenway Park and 38-27 in Oakland).
-- ALL-TIME: The Red Sox lead the alltime series 246-193 since the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968...the Red Sox are 141-81 at Fenway Park and 105-112 in Oakland.

DAVID ORTIZ leads the majors with 31 home runs, his 4th campaign with at least 30 homers in 4 seasons with the Red Sox…Joins Manny Ramirez (first 5) and Jimmie Foxx (first 5) as the only players in club history with 30 homers in their first 4 seasons as a Red Sox . . . Was the 1st player to lead the A.L. in both homers and RBI at the All-Star Break since Cecil Fielder in 1990, 1st Boston player since Jim Rice in 1978 . . . Has most homers ever by a Red Sox in season’s 1st 87 games…Leads the majors with 8 homers and 17 RBI in 10 games during July…Has 3 more homers and 4 more RBI than any other major leaguer in the month.

SAVE ME! Jonathan Papelbon has already set the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with 26 saves, breaking Dick Radatz’s mark of 24 saves as a rookie in 1962…His save total tie for the 9th most by a rookie in major league history, 11 shy of record set by Seattle’s Kaz Sasaki in 2000.

AN ALMOST HISTORIC RUN: After stealing 3 bases each on Saturday and Sunday, the Red Sox had a pair of thefts last night…According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Boston last had 3+ SB in back-to-back games in September 1996 and had not had 3 or more steals in 3 straight games since May 1912…Sox had recorded just 8 SB in previous 35 games before this 3-game stretch.

Red Sox call up Craig Breslow

Craig Breslow, the Pawtucket Red Sox' lone Triple-A All-Star representative, has been summoned to Boston and will pitch for the Red Sox at least through the weekend. Breslow takes the roster spot that was opened Monday when Jason Johnson was sent to Class A Wilmington.

Breslow is only expected to stay with the Sox until Monday. At that point, it's assumed Boston will send Breslow back to Pawtucket and replace him with Kyle Snyder, who will start Monday night against his old team, the Kansas City Royals.

The A's, Boston's opponent this weekend at Fenway Park, have a number of dangerous left-handed hitters and Breslow gives the Red Sox another left-handed option in the bullpen to go with Javier Lopez.

Breslow is 5-1 with a 3.40 earned-run average this season, and has an excellent 50-to-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 45 innings.

Johnson -- who was sent to Wilmington because both Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland had their own All-Star breaks earlier this week -- is expected to be called up to Pawtucket by this weekend.

HOME OWNERS
The Red Sox tonight begin a stretch in which they play 26 of their first 38 games at home after the All-Star Break…winners of their last 9 games at Fenway, Boston boasts the best home record in all of baseball since the start of the 2003 season:

1. RED SOX 189-91 .675
2. New York (AL) 186-101 .648
3. Atlanta 178-109 .620
4. St. Louis 177-109 .619
5. Oakland 178-111 .616

Since the start of 2003, Boston has at least 10 fewer home losses than any other club in the majors. . . . Boston’s 9-game winning streak at home is its longest since a 14-game home winning streak July 19-August 26, 2005…the Sox tonight look to post a double-digit winning streak at home for the 3rd season in a row, as the club also won 11-straight games here August 16-September 3, 2004.

BRINGING THEIR WORK HOME: Following a 10-game road trip that led to the All-Star Break, the Red Sox tonight return to Fenway Park to begin an 8-game homestand with Oakland (4 games), Kansas City (3) and Texas (one) . . . The Red Sox have 44 home games remaining on their 2006 schedule, more than any other team in all of baseball . . . Originally scheduled for 7 games, the homestand was extended to 8 games with the make-up of the May 14 rainout vs. Texas now scheduled for July 20, what had been a mutual off day for both clubs.

ON THE RUN: Winners in 17 of their last 22 games since June 16, Boston with a 53-33 mark is off to its best start through 86 games since 2002 (53-33 with a loss in game 87) . . . Boston posted 53 wins or more at the All-Star Break for just the 6th time since 1960, joining 2003 (55 wins), 1986 (56), 1979 (56), 1978 (57) and 1969 (54).

IN GOOD STANDING: The Red Sox lead the American League East heading into post-All-Star Break play for the 2nd season in a row, as Boston led Baltimore by 2.0 games at this point in the campaign in 2005 . . . Boston’s 3.0-game lead at the All-Star Break is its largest since 1995, when Boston led Detroit by 3.0 games in the American League East at this point in the season . . . The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 25 days…Boston has also been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first in the A.L. East for 90 of 101 days in 2006.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Jon Lester tonight looks to become the first Red Sox rookie starter to win his first 5 decisions since Aaron Sele won his first 6 decisions in 1993 he is the first Red Sox rookie left-handed starter to win his first 4 decisions since Rick Jones in 1976 . . . Since 1960, only 8 Red Sox left-handed starters have won as many as 4 games in their rookie campaigns, most recently done by Vaughn Eshelman, who won 5 starts as a Red Sox rookie in 1995 . . . Already this season, 5 Red Sox pitchers have earned their first major league win: Lester, Lenny DiNardo, Jermaine Van Buren, Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen.

DIVISIONAL MATTERS: The Red Sox are in the midst of a 24-game stretch against clubs outside of the division…prior to the 4 games at Tampa Bay last week, Boston had played 22 games in a row outside of the A.L. East….therefore, the Sox are in a stretch in which 46 of 50 games are against non-A.L. East teams after starting the year with 40 of their first 57 games against A.L. East foes . . . Overall, the Red Sox are 28-14 (.667) against non-A.L. East teams this season and are 25-19 (.568) against their division.

HE'S A GOLIATH: David Ortiz has already connected for 31 home runs this season, his 4th campaign with at least 30 homers in 4 seasons with the Red Sox…he joins Manny Ramirez (first 5) and Jimmie Foxx (first 5) as the only players in club history with 30 homers in their first 4 seasons as a Red Sox . . . According to Elias, Ortiz became the fastest Red Sox to 30 homers in club history in 84 team games, breaking the mark of 96 games set by Manny Ramirez in 2001 . . . Including 8 homers in his last 37 at-bats Ortiz leads the majors with 31 homers and 87 RBI…Ortiz is on a 162-game pace for 58 homers and 164 RBI in 2006, numbers that would shatter his career highs of 47 homers and 148 RBI set in 2005 and break Foxx’s 68-year-old Red Sox franchise record of 50 homers in 1938.

THE RED SOX AND ATHLETICS
-- 2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and Athletics meet 10 times in 2006, though these 4 games this weekend represent Oakland’s lone trip to Boston in 2006…the Red Sox make 2 trips to the Bay Area this season for a pair of 3-game series: July 24-26 and August 28-30.
-- 2005 SEASON: The Red Sox went 6-4 against the Athletics last season and have now won 10 of their last 13 games against Oakland at Fenway . . . The Red Sox have finished with a .500-or-better record at home against the Athletics in 14 of the last 15 seasons, all but 2003 (1-2).
-- ALL-TIME: The Red Sox lead the all-time series 246-192 since the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968...the Red Sox are 141-80 at Fenway Park and 105-112 in Oakland . . .The Red Sox are 9-3-1 in the last 13 season series with Oakland, going 86-49 vs. the A’s since the start of the 1993 season (48-22 at Fenway Park and 38-27 in Oakland).

RECORDS AND MILESTONES
-- THE 19-INNING MARATHON: On Sunday, the Red Sox and White Sox played 19 innings at U.S. Cellular Field, with Chicago capturing a 6-5 win . . . At 6 hours, 19 minutes, Sunday’s game was the 3rd-longest by time in franchise history, trailing only a 6:35, 18-inning loss August 25, 2001 at Texas, and a 6:30, 19-inning win April 11, 1992 at Cleveland . . . It was only the 9th game of 19 innings or more in club history, the longest since August 1, 2000 at Seattle, a 5-4, 19-inning loss.
-- DEFENSE RECORD: The Red Sox set a new major league record by playing 17 games in a row without an error from June 11-30 . . . Boston surpassed the previous major league record set by the St. Louis Cardinals July 30-August 16, 1992 and broke the A.L. mark of 15 previously held by the Rangers from August 4-19, 1996…the Red Sox cleanly handled 668 chances between errors.
-- SAVE ME! Jonathan Papelbon has already set the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with 26 saves, breaking Dick Radatz’s mark of 24 saves as a rookie in 1962 . . . Papelbon’s 26 saves already tie for the 9th most by a rookie in major league history, only 11 shy of the record set by Seattle’s Kaz Sasaki in 2000.

Red Sox send Johnson way down to Single-A

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Red Sox righthander Jason Johnson, struggling in the majors and needing a place to pitch during the All-Star break, was optioned all the way to Single-A.

Also Monday, Boston hired former Kansas City Royals general manager Allard Baird as a special assignment scout. Baird spent 18 years with the Royals, serving as GM from 2000-06.

Johnson will start on Wednesday for the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolina League. Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland are off Tuesday and Wednesday because of their leagues' all-star breaks.

No one was immediately activated to replace Johnson on the Red Sox roster.

Johnson is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in two starts for Boston since being acquired from Cleveland on June 21. His combined numbers with the Indians and Red Sox are 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 14 starts.

In another move, the Red Sox agreed to terms with two draft picks, both righthanded pitchers: Bryce Cox (third round) and Brian Steinocher (21st round).

HE’S A GOLIATH!
David Ortiz has collected a whopping 56 homers and 157 RBI in the last year since the 2005 All-Star Break, far and away the most by any major leaguer in that time frame.

5. Lance Berkman, HOU 125
Additionally, Ortiz is the first Red Sox in club history to reach 30 homers by the All-Star Break…he is the 29th player in major league history to reach the mark by the Break, the first since Barry Bonds in 2003 (30).

Manny Ramirez, 2001 26

Thanks to David Vincent for his Red Sox home run research assistance.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: David Ortiz became the first player in Red Sox history to reach 30 homers before the All-Star Break and rookie lefthander Jon Lester improved his record to 4-0 as the Red Sox last night defeated the White Sox, 7-2, in the first 2006 meeting of the past 2 World Champions . . . The Red Sox are now 4-4 on their 10-game, 3-city trip with the Marlins (2-1), Devil Rays (1-3) and White Sox (1-0)…this is Boston’s 3rd trip of at least 10 days already this season…after the All-Star Break, the Red Sox have only 5 road trips, 4 of which are less than one week in length, and play 44 of their final 76 games (58 percent) at Fenway.

ON THE RECORD: Winners in 16 of their last 20 games beginning June 16, the Red Sox with a 52-32 mark are off to their best start through 84 games since posting a 52-32 mark in 2002 (with a loss in game 85)…with a win today, the Red Sox would possess their best record through 85 games since 1986 (55-30) . . . In the last 47 seasons starting in 1960, the Red Sox have had more than 52 wins before the All-Star Break just 5 times: 2003 (55 wins), 1986 (56), 1979 (56), 1978 (57) and 1969 (54).

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 20 days…the Red Sox have also been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 84 of 95 days in 2006 . . . The Red Sox have maintained a lead in the division of 3.0 games or greater for the last 11 days, Boston’s longest such streak since a 12-day stretch from September 1-11, 2005.

PITCHING IN: Today’s starter Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling have each reached 10 wins this season, one of only 3 pairs of teammates to reach 10 victories in the majors this season (joining Detroit’s Kenny Rogers and Justin Verlander and New York’s Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson) . . . Schilling and Beckett are the 3rd pair of Red Sox teammates in the last 60 years each with 10 or more wins by the end of July…they join Roger Clemens and Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd in 1986 and Clemens and Mike Boddicker in 1990 (research: Elias Sports Bureau).

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Jon Lester last night became the first Red Sox rookie starter to win his first 4 decisions since Aaron Sele won his first 6 decisions in 1993…he also became the first Red Sox rookie left-handed starter to win his first 4 decisions since Rick Jones in 1976.

PICKING UP THE PACE: Including 7 homers in his last 24 at-bats, David Ortiz leads all of baseball with 30 homers and 84 RBI…Ortiz is on a 162-game pace for 58 home runs and 162 RBI in 2006, numbers that would shatter his career highs of 47 homers and 148 RBI set in 2005 and break Jimmie Foxx’s 68-year-old Red Sox franchise record of 50 homers in 1938.

DEFENSE RECORD: Boston recently set a new major league record by playing 17 games in a row without an error from June 11-30 . . . Boston surpassed the previous major league record (16) set by the St. Louis Cardinals July 30-August 16, 1992…on June 29, the Red Sox broke the A.L. mark of 15 previously held by Texas from August 4-19, 1996…the Red Sox cleanly handled 668 chances between errors . . . Boston leads the majors with a .990 fielding percentage in 2006.

THE RED SOX AND WHITE SOX
2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and White Sox meet only 6 times in 2006 – these 3 meetings at U.S. Cellular Field this weekend and 3 games September 4-6 at Fenway…the 4th is Labor Day.

2005 SEASON: The Red Sox won the 7-game series in 2005, 4-3…Boston won 2 of 3 games at Fenway and split a 4-game set here last July . . . The Red Sox and White Sox met in the 2005 American League Division Series, with the White Sox recording a 3-game sweep en route to their first World Championship since 1917.

ALL-TIME: The Red Sox lead the alltime series by a 934-903 count…Boston is 541-378 at home (468-325 at Fenway Park) and 393-525 in Chicago (35-37 at U.S. Cellular Field since the new Comiskey opened in 1991) . . . Since the start of the 2003 season, 12 of the 19 games contested by the Red Sox and White Sox have been decided by 3 runs or less, 13 by 2 runs or less and 9 by one run.

ALL-STAR FODDER
HEY NOW, YOU’'RE AN ALL-STAR…: Boston on Sunday had 4 players named to the A.L. All-Star team…here are some tidbits about this year’s Red Sox contingent:
-- 2B Mark Loretta was elected by fans to start Tuesday in Pittsburgh…it is his 2nd All-Star appearance, his first as a starter…was a N.L. reserve in 2004 with San Diego…he is the first Boston second baseman to be elected to start since fan voting resumed in 1970, and the first Sox second baseman to start the All-Star game since Felix Mantilla in 1965.
-- 1B David Ortiz was elected by fans to start at first base for the A.L….he was voted to start at D.H. in 2005 and was a reserve in 2004…Ortiz is just the 6th Red Sox to start at first base in the All-Star Game, the first to be voted to do so by fans since the current voting process resumed in 1970.
-- RHP Jonathan Papelbon was voted to the A.L. All-Star team by his peers, leading all relief pitcher vote-getters with 283 tallies…he is just the 2nd Red Sox rookie pitcher to be named to the team, joining Don Schwall in 1961 (2nd game)…overall, he is Boston’s 8th rookie All-Star, the first since Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.
-- OF Manny Ramirez was voted by fans to start in the outfield at the All-Star Game in Pittsburgh next week…is the 10th All-Star nod of his career…he has been elected to start each of the last 7 All-Star Games.

FINAL DESTINATION: The 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox and 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox tonight meet for the first time in 2006, the final leg of Boston’s 10-game, 3-city trip with the Marlins (2-1), Devil Rays (1-3) and White Sox . . . The Red Sox and White Sox meet as back-to-back defending World Champions for the first time since 1919, when the 1918 World Champion Red Sox won 9 of 20 games against the 1917 World Champion White Sox . . . Boston is 15-4 in its last 19 contests beginning June 16…the Red Sox began this stretch 1.0-game out in the American League East and are now 3.0-games up on the Yankees in the division.

ROAD WARRIORS: By the All-Star Break, the Red Sox will have played 49 games on the road and just 37 at home, leaving 44 games at Fenway and only 32 games on the road for the Red Sox after the break…the Red Sox are 81-37 (.686) at Fenway Park since the start of last season, by far the best home record in the majors . . . This is Boston’s 3rd trip of at least 10 days already this season…after the All-Star Break, the Red Sox have only 5 road trips, 4 of which are less than one week in length.

DIVISIONAL MATTERS: After 4 games at Tampa Bay this week, Boston tonight moves outside of the A.L. East to begin a 24-game stretch against clubs outside of the division…prior to the 4 games at Tampa Bay, Boston had played 22 games in a row outside of the A.L. East….therefore, the Red Sox are in the middle of a stretch in which 46 of 50 games are against non-A.L. East teams after starting the year by playing 40 of their first 57 games against A.L. East foes . . . Overall, the Red Sox are 26-13 against non-A.L. East teams this season and are 25- 19 against their division.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 19 days…the Red Sox have also been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 83 of 94 days in 2006.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Jon Lester tonight looks to become the first Red Sox rookie starter to win his first 4 decisions since Aaron Sele won his first 6 decisions in 1993 he also aims to become the first Red Sox rookie left-handed starter to win his first 4 decisions since Rick Jones in 1976 . .

CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Manny Ramirez last night clubbed his 223rd home run as a Red Sox, tying Bobby Doerr for 6th all-time in club history…Mo Vaughn is next with 230 Red Sox homers . . . Ramirez and David Ortiz homered in the same game for the 9th time this season and the 39th time since becoming teammates in 2003…in club history, only Dwight Evans and Jim Rice have turned the trick more by homering in the same 56 games . . . David Ortiz is on pace for 57 home runs and 160 RBI this season…Jimmie Foxx owns both club records with 50 homers and 175 RBI in 1938.

THE RED SOX AND WHITE SOX

2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and White Sox meet only 6 times in 2006 – these 3 meetings at U.S. Cellular Field this weekend and 3 games September 4-6 at Fenway…the 4th is Labor Day.

2005 SEASON: The Red Sox won the 7-game series in 2005, 4-3…Boston won 2 of 3 games at Fenway and split a 4-game set here last July . . . The Red Sox and White Sox met in the 2005 American League Division Series, with the White Sox recording a 3-game sweep en route to their first World Championship since 1919.

Since the start of the 2003 season, 19 of the 12 games contested by the Red Sox and White Sox have been decided by 3 runs or less, 13 by 2 runs or less and 9 by one run…2 have gone extra innings.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?: Boston’s 7-day stay in Florida comes to an end tonight as the Red Sox and Devil Rays wrap up their 4-game set at Tropicana Field…the Red Sox took 2 of 3 games from the Marlins in Miami last weekend and have dropped the first 3 games to the Devil Rays this week…tomorrow, the Red Sox begin a 3-game set with the World Champion White Sox that caps their 10-game trip and leads to the All-Star Break . . . The Red Sox have lost 3 games in a row for just the 3rd time this season and tonight aim to avoid equaling their longest losing streak of the season, a 4-game skid June 11-15…when the Red Sox ended that streak, they immediately followed with a season-best 12-game winning streak . . . Despite losses in their last 3 games, the Red Sox are 14-4 in their last 18 contests beginning June 16…the Sox began this stretch 1.0-game out in the A.L. East and are now 3.0-games up on the Yankees in the division.

TOUGH TIMES AT THE TROP: Boston had won its last 5 overall series starting June 16 before this 4-game set at Tampa Bay…the Sox have lost 4-straight games at Tropicana Field for the first time since a 4-game skid July 6, 1999-August 28, 2000…the Sox have never dropped 5 games in a row at the Trop . . . Including this week, the Red Sox have lost 4 of their last 5 series at Tropicana Field since the start of the 2005 season, going 5-10 (.333) here in that span…the Red Sox have never been swept in a series at Tropicana Field (22 series here into this week)…the Red Sox have not been swept in any 4-game series since September 3-6, 1998 at Toronto.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 18 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 82 of 93 days in 2006.

300 WITH THE SOX: Tim Wakefield, who made his 300th start with the Red Sox last Saturday in Miami, has 333 starts in his career, 17th-most among active pitchers…however, Wakefield is one of only 4 active pitchers to boast at least 300 starts with his current club…the other 3: John Smoltz, who has made 412 starts with Atlanta, Brad Radke, who has made 367 starts with Minnesota, and Jamie Moyer, who has made 316 starts with Seattle . . . Tonight marks the 121st start for the battery of Tim Wakefield and Doug Mirabelli…the pair recently celebrated the 5-year anniversary of their first start together, a no-decision June 29, 2001 at Toronto…Wakefield and Mirabelli have combined for 55 victories: 52 in Wakefield starts and 3 in relief appearances.

ON THE DOUBLE: Mike Lowell last night recorded his 30th double of the season to become just the 4th Red Sox in the last 47 seasons beginning in 1960 to reach 30 doubles by the All-Star Break…he joins David Ortiz (33 in 2004), Bill Mueller (30 in 2003) and Nomar Garciaparra (30 in 2002) in this exclusive company.

HOME, STEAL HOME: Carl Crawford last night became the first Red Sox opponent to record a straight steal of home (not as the back end of a double steal) since Cleveland’s Omar Vizquel turned the trick September 20, 2000 off Rheal Cormier in the 5th inning of the 2nd game of a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park . . . Thanks to 3 steals last night, Crawford now has 201 steals in his big league career that began July 20, 2002…in that same span, the Red Sox have 240 stolen bases as a team beginning July 20, 2002 . . . This season, Crawford leads the A.L. with 32 steals, more than the totals of 7 teams in the majors, including the Red Sox and their 23 steals in 2006.

THE RED SOX AND DEVIL RAYS

2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and Devil Rays meet 19 times in 2006, 9 times at Fenway Park and 10 times at Tropicana Field…the clubs have played 13 times thus far, with the Sox holding a 7-6 edge (6-1 at Fenway and 1-5 at the Trop).

ALL-TIME: Boston leads the all-time series 95-50…the Red Sox are 53-20 at Fenway and 42-30 at Tropicana Field . . . The Sox are 6-1-1 in 8 season series since the Rays joined the American League in 1998, losing only in 1999…the clubs split 12 in 2000 . . . Boston has won the last 5 season series (2001-2005), winning at least 12 games vs. Tampa Bay each year from 2001-2005…the Rays are the only team against whom the Sox have won each of the last 5 season series (2001-2005)…since 2001, the Sox are 76-32 against the Rays.

RECORDS AND MILESTONES

DEFENSE RECORD: The Red Sox recently set a new major league record by playing 17 games in a row without an error from June 11-30 . . . Boston surpassed the previous major league record set by the St. Louis Cardinals July 30-August 16, 1992…on Thursday, the Red Sox broke the American League mark of 15 previously held by the Rangers from August 4-19, 1996…Boston’s last error had occurred June 11 vs. Texas (Kevin Youkilis in the first game of a doubleheader)…the Red Sox cleanly handled 668 chances between errors.

PREVIOUSLY ON 24: Jonathan Papelbon Sunday set the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with his 25th save, breaking Dick Radatz’ mark of 24 saves as a rookie in 1962 . . . Not yet the All-Star Break, Papelbon’s 25 saves already tie for the 10th most by a rookie in major league history, only 12 shy of the record set by Seattle’s Kaz Sasaki in 2000.

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD: The Red Sox have dropped the first 2 games of this 4-game set at Tampa Bay and have reached the midway point of their 10-game, 3-city trip with the Marlins (2-1), Devil Rays (0-2) and White Sox (3 games this weekend)…the Red Sox have also reached the midway point of their season . . . Despite losses in their last 2 games, the Red Sox are 14-3 in their last 17 contests beginning June 16…the Sox began this stretch 1.0-game out in the A.L. East and are now 4.0-games up on the Yankees in the division…the Sox have lost back-to-back games for just the 8th time this season, the first time since their season-high 4-game losing streak June 11-15 . . . This 10-game trip brings the Red Sox to the All-Star Break…when play resumes a week from tomorrow, Boston opens with an 8-game homestand with Oakland (4 games), Kansas City (3) and Texas (one make-up game)…in fact, the Red Sox play 15 of 21 and 26 of their first 38 games after the Break at Fenway.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 17 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 81 of 92 days in 2006 . . . The Red Sox have a 4.0-game lead in the A.L. East for the 4th day in a row, matching their largest margin of the season…the Red Sox were last more than 4.0 games up on August 17 (4.5) and August 13 (5.0) in 2005.

AND THAT'S THE END OF THE FIRST HALF: The Red Sox have reached the midway point of their campaign…here is a comparison of Boston’s numbers in the first half of the 2006 campaign to each half of the 2005 season:

2005 2005 2006

HELLO MY NAME IS _______: Tonight’s starting pitcher Jason Johnson became the 22nd pitcher to appear for the Sox when he made his debut last Friday at Florida…in 2005, the Sox saw 26 pitchers appear in a game all season…this year, 15 different pitchers have already collected a win for the Sox, matching the club’s total from 2005 . . . The Red Sox last had more than 15 pitchers win a game in a season in 2003, when 16 pitchers were victorious.

PICKING UP THE PACE: At the midway point of the club’s season, David Ortiz leads the A.L. with 76 RBI and is tied for the league lead with 27 homers…he is on a 162-game pace for 152 RBI and 54 home runs, which would shatter his career high of 148 RBI set in 2005 and break Jimmie Foxx’s 68-year-old club record of 50 homers in 1938.

DYNAMIC DUO: David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez yesterday homered in the same game for the 8th time this season and the 38th time since becoming teammates in 2003, tying Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr for 2nd-most in club history…Dwight Evans and Jim Rice own the club mark by homering in the same 56 games.

RED SOX VS. DEVIL RAYS, 2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and Devil Rays meet 19 times in 2006, 9 times at Fenway Park and 10 times at Tropicana Field…the clubs have played 12 times thus far, with the Sox holding a 7-5 edge.

RED SOX VS. DEVIL RAYS, ALL-TIME: Boston leads the all-time series 95-49…the Red Sox are 53-20 at Fenway Park and 43-29 at Tropicana Field . . . The Sox are 6-1-1 in 8 season series since the Rays joined the American League in 1998, losing only in 1999…the clubs split 12 in 2000 . . . Boston has won the last 5 season series (2001-2005), winning at least 12 games vs. Tampa Bay each year fro 2001-2005…the Rays are the only team against whom the Sox have won each of the last 5 season series (2001- 2005)…since 2001, the Sox are 76-31 against the Rays.

PREVIOUSLY ON 24: Jonathan Papelbon Sunday set the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with his 25th save, breaking Dick Radatz’s mark of 24 saves as a rookie in 1962 . . . Not yet the All-Star Break, Papelbon’s 25 saves already tie for the 10th most by a rookie in major league history, only 12 shy of the record set by Seattle’s Kaz Sasaki in 2000.

WHY MUST YOU SHUT ME OUT? The Red Sox last night began their 4-game set at Tropicana Field with a 3-0 loss to Scott Kazmir and the Devil Rays…this stop in St. Petersburg represents the middle leg of Boston’s 10-game, 3-city trip against the Marlins (2-1), Devil Rays (0-1) and White Sox (3 games, Friday-Sunday)…today is game No. 81, the midway point of Boston’s season . . . The Red Sox last night endured their 3rd shutout of the season, also losing 3-0 to Seattle April 15 and 6-0 to Texas on May 12, both of which were at Fenway…last night marked Boston’s first shutout loss on the road since September 11, 2005 – a 1-0 loss to Randy Johnson at Yankee Stadium . . . Despite their status as one of only 3 clubs with 50 wins this year, the Red Sox are the only club in all of baseball yet to record a shutout in 2006…the 2002 Montreal Expos (46-41) are the last club with a winning record and no shutouts by the All-Star Break…the 1996 Baltimore Orioles (46-39) are the last to do so in the A.L. . . . The Red Sox last entered the Break without a shutout in 1996 when they were 36-49, the only occurrence in the last 47 seasons beginning in 1960.

NEVERTHELESS: Despite last night’s loss, the Red Sox have won 14 of their last 16 games beginning June 16, going from 1.0 game out in the A.L. East at the start of this stretch to their current 4.0-game edge on the Yankees in the division . . . The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 16 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 80 of 91 days in 2006 . . . The Red Sox have a 4.0-game lead in the A.L. East for the 3rd day in a row, matching their largest margin of the season…the Red Sox were last more than 4.0 games up on August 17 (4.5) and August 13 (5.0) in 2005.

JUST KAZ: Scott Kazmir’s complete-game 2-hitter was the best thrown at the Red Sox since Jason Schmidt’s complete-game one-hitter June 20, 2004 at San Francisco . . . In the last 10 seasons beginning in 1997, the Red Sox have had a complete-game 2-hitter (or better) tossed at them 9 times…8 of those games have come on the road…here’s a breakdown of those 9 games:

DATE OPPOSING PITCHER SOX HITS BY WHOM SCORE
July 3, 2006 @ TB’s Scott Kazmir 2 Gonzalez, Ramirez L, 0-3
June 20, 2004 @ SF’s Jason Schmidt 1 Youkilis L, 0-4
September 2, 2003 @ CWS’s Bartolo Colon 2 Nixon, Kapler W, 2-1
August 11, 2003 @ OAK’s Tim Hudson 2 Garciaparra, Ramirez L, 0-4
August 16, 2002 @ MIN’s Joe Mays 2 Damon, Baerga L, 0-5
September 2, 2001 vs. NYY’s Mike Mussina 1 Everett L, 0-1
August 8, 2000 @ ANA’s Ramon Ortiz 2 O’Leary, Lansing L, 1-2
September 3, 1997 @ MON’s Carlos Perez 2 Valentin, Cordero L, 0-1
May 13, 1997 @ KC’s Tim Belcher 2 Vaughn, Valentin L, 0-9

HAPPY 4TH! The Red Sox today play on the road on the Fourth of July for the 4th season in a row…Boston has dropped its last 2 Fourth of July affairs and aims for its first win since a 10-3 pounding at Yankee Stadium in 2003, a game that featured 7 Red Sox homers…prior to this 3-game losing streak, the Sox won 5 straight Independence Day contests from 1999-2003…Boston is 87-62 (.584) all-time on the Fourth of July . . . Additional memorable Fourth of July moments in Red Sox history include a single-game club record 8 homers on July 4, 1977 vs. Toronto at Fenway…6 years later, Dave Righetti no-hit the Red Sox on July 4, 1983 at Yankee Stadium.

PICKING UP THE PACE: Heading into the halfway point of the club’s season today, David Ortiz leads the American League with 75 RBI and ranks second in the league with 26 homers…he is on a 162-game pace for 152 RBI and 53 home runs, which would shatter his career high of 148 RBI set in 2005 and break Jimmie Foxx’s 68-year-old club record of 50 homers in 1938.

PITCHING IN: Tonight’s starter Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett have each reached 10 wins this season, one of 2 pairs of teammates to reach 10 victories in the majors this season (Detroit’s Kenny Rogers and Justin Verlander also have reached double digits in victories)…Schilling and Beckett are just the 3rd pair of Red Sox teammates in the last 60 years each with 10 or more wins by the end of July…they join Roger Clemens and Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd in 1986 and Clemens and Mike Boddicker in 1990 (research: Elias Sports Bureau).

STILL STREAKING: Alex Gonzalez enters the day with a 12-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in the A.L….Gonzalez’s run trails only the Dodgers’ Nomar Garciaparra’s 15-gamer for the longest active tear in the majors.

STAR STRUCK: With the announcement of All-Star teams 2 days ago, the Red Sox are now scheduled to face 3 All-Star pitchers in 7 days leading up to the All-Star Break: Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir last night, and Chicago’s Mark Buehrle on Friday and Jose Contreras on Sunday.

2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and Devil Rays meet 19 times in 2006, 9 times at Fenway Park and 10 times at Tropicana Field…the clubs have played 11 times thus far, with the Sox holding a 7-4 edge.

ALL-TIME: Boston leads the all-time series 95-48…the Sox are 53-20 at Fenway Park and 43-28 at the Trop . . . The Sox are 6-1-1 in 8 season series since the Rays joined the American League in 1998, losing only in 1999…the clubs split 12 in 2000 . . . Boston has won the last 5 season series (2001-2005), winning at least 12 games vs. Tampa Bay each year from 2001-2005…the Rays are the only team against whom the Sox have won each of the last 5 season series (2001-2005)…since 2001, the Sox are 76-30 against the Rays.

DEFENSE RECORD: Despite a pair of errors Saturday and Sunday, the Red Sox recently set a new major league record by playing 17 games in a row without an error from June 11-30 . .

Dominican prospect, 16, ready to sign on, sources say

BY SEAN McADAM
Journal Sports Writer

MIAMI -- Yesterday represented the start of the international free-agent signing period, and the Red Sox are set to announce two significant signings in the coming days.

Industry sources indicate the Sox have reached agreement with 16-year-old Dominican Engel Beltre, a left-handed hitting outfielder with power and a strong throwing arm.

Beltre is expected to land a signing bonus in excess of $700,000. One National League organization recently rated Beltre as one of the four best free agents available in Latin America.

HE'S A GOLIATH: 3 years ago today, David Ortiz connected for one home run at Tropicana Field, a blast that ignited a 3-game, 5-homer stretch that included back-to-back 2-homer games at Yankee Stadium July 4 and 5…beginning July 3, 2003, Ortiz leads all major leaguers with 141 home runs and 426 RBI, which are 49 more RBI than his next closest competitor (Manny Ramirez) in that 3-year span and 61 more than the next closest player not in a Red Sox uniform:

M.L. HOME RUNS, SINCE JULY 3, 2003
1. David Ortiz, BOS 141
2. Albert Pujols, STL 134
3. Manny Ramirez, BOS 130
4. Alex Rodriguez, NYY 129
5. Adam Dunn, CIN 116

M.L. RBI, SINCE JULY 3, 2003
1. David Ortiz, BOS 426
2. Manny Ramirez, BOS 377
3. Alex Rodriguez, NYY 365
4. Albert Pujols, STL 364
5. Miguel Tejada, BAL 356

A STOP AT THE TROP: After taking 2 of 3 games in Florida this weekend to wrap up a 16-2 run through interleague play, the Red Sox tonight continue their 10-game trip with the first of 4 against the Devil Rays…Boston concludes its journey with 3 games this weekend against the World Champion White Sox, taking the club to the All-Star Break . . . Winners in 14 of its last 15 games, Boston yesterday reached 50 wins in 79 games (or fewer) for just the 9th time in the club’s 106 seasons, the first time since 1986 (51-28 through 79 games with a win in game 80)…the Red Sox also reached 50 wins this quick in 1979, 1978, 1946, 1915, 1912, 1904 and 1903 . . . The Red Sox are a season-high 21 games above .500 for the first time in 2006.

ROAD WARRIORS: By the All-Star Break, the Red Sox will have played 49 games on the road and just 37 at home, leaving 44 games at Fenway and only 32 games on the road for the Red Sox after the break . . . This is Boston’s 3rd trip of at least 10 days already this season…after the All-Star Break, the Red Sox have only 5 road trips, 4 of which are less than one week in length.

DIVISIONAL MATTERS: Boston tonight reunites with an A.L. East foe for the first time since June 8 at New York, snapping a run of 22 games in a row outside of the division…the Red Sox went 16-6 in those 22 games…overall, the Sox are 26-13 (.667) against non-A.L. East teams this season and are 24-16 (.600) against their division . . . These 4 games provide just a quick taste of life within the A.L. East, as Boston’s next 24 games after this series are against clubs outside of its division…therefore, the Red Sox are in the middle of a stretch in which 46 of 50 games are against non-A.L. East teams after starting the year by playing 40 of their first 57 games against the A.L. East.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 15 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 79 of 90 days in 2006 . . . The Red Sox have a 4.0-game lead in the A.L. East for the 2nd day in a row, matching their largest margin of the season…the Red Sox were last more than 4.0 games up on August 17 (4.5) and August 13 (5.0) in 2005.

WRAPPING UP INTERLEAGUE PLAY: The Red Sox went 16-2 (.889) vs. the National League this season and, along with the 2006 Minnesota Twins, equaled the 2002 Oakland Athletics (16-2) for the most wins by a club in a single interleague year . . . Boston’s 16 wins are its most ever against the National League in a single season, shattering the previous mark of 12 set in 2005…the Red Sox have won 20 of their last 22 (.909) and are 25-3 in their last 28 interleague contests beginning June 12, 2005 . . . David Ortiz led the majors with 9 home runs in interleague play in 2006, just the 15th player to hit at least 9 homers in a single interleague campaign.

PITCHING IN: Curt Schilling and tonight’s starter Josh Beckett have each reached 10 wins this season, one of 2 pairs of teammates to reach 10 victories in the majors this season (Detroit’s Kenny Rogers and Justin Verlander also have reached double digits in victories)…Schilling and Beckett are just the 3rd pair of Red Sox teammates in the last 60 years each with 10 or more wins by the end of July…they join Roger Clemens and Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd in 1986 and Clemens and Mike Boddicker in 1990 (research: Elias Sports Bureau).

LEADING THE WAY: Kevin Youkilis yesterday connected for his 4th home run to lead off the game this season and of his career…he is just the 6th Red Sox in club history to hit at least 4 leadoff homers in the same season, joining Nomar Garciaparra (7 in 1997), Dwight Evans (5 in 1985), Mike Andrews (4 in 1970), Tommy Harper (4 in both 1972 and 1973), Bernie Carbo (4 in 1975) and Ellis Burks (4 in 1987) . . . Florida’s Hanley Ramirez yesterday also led off the game with a homer…the Red Sox were last involved in a game in which both teams hit a leadoff homer on July 15, 1999, when Jose Offerman led off the game for the Red Sox and Doug Glanville led off for the Phillies at Fenway Park (thanks to David Vincent for his research assistance).

STILL STREAKING: Alex Gonzalez enters the day with an 11-game hitting streak, tied for the 2nd-longest active run in the majors (Nomar Garciaparra has a 14-game run).

2006 SEASON: The Red Sox and Devil Rays meet 19 times in 2006, 9 times at Fenway Park and 10 times at Tropicana Field…the clubs have played 10 times thus far, with the Sox holding a 7-3 edge.

ALL-TIME: Boston leads the all-time series 95-47…the Sox are 53-20 at Fenway Park and 43-27 at the Trop . . . The Sox are 6-1-1 in 8 season series since the Rays joined the American League in 1998, losing only in 1999…the clubs split 12 in 2000 . . . Boston has won the last 5 season series (2001-2005), winning at least 12 games vs. Tampa Bay each year from 2001-2005…the Rays are the only team against whom the Sox have won each of the last 5 season series (2001- 2005)…since 2001, the Sox are 76-29 against the Rays.

DEFENSE RECORD: Despite a pair of errors in each of their last 2 games, the Red Sox recently set a new major league record by playing 17 games in a row without an error from June 11-30 . .

PREVIOUSLY ON 24: Jonathan Papelbon yesterday set the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with his 25th save, breaking Dick Radatz’s mark of 24 saves as a rookie in 1962 . . . Not yet the All-Star Break, Papelbon’s 25 saves already tie for the 10th most by a rookie in major league history, only 12 shy of the record set by Seattle’s Kaz Sasaki in 2000 . . . Papelbon’s 0.43 ERA (2 ER/41.2 IP0 continues to pace all big league relievers, just ahead of Toronto’s B.J. Ryan and his 0.45 ERA this season.

STAYING ACTIVE: Mark Loretta has hit safely in 23 consecutive interleague games, the
longest active streak of its kind in the majors…he has hit safely in all 16 of his
interleague games in 2006 as well as his final 7 games in 2004…Mark has at
least one hit in every interleague game he has played starting June 20, 2004 with San Diego vs. Toronto . . . Here’s a look at the longest active interleague hitting streaks:

PLAYER, CLUB GAMES DATES
1. Mark Loretta, BOS 23 6/20/04-
2. N. Garciaparra, LAD 17 6/27/04-
3. Adrian Beltre, SEA 15 5/21/06-
Kenji Johjima, SEA 15 5/19/06-

Mark’s .341 career average in
interleague play ranks 3rd all-time
behind only Michael Young (.350) and
Larry Walker (.346) . . . Overall, Loretta has hit safely in 13
games in a row (.455, 24-for-55), tied
for the 2nd-longest active hitting streak
in the majors (with Nomar Garciaparra
trailing only Adrian Beltre, 14)…Mark is 3
games shy of his career-best 16-gamer
in 2001 with Milwaukee.

BACK ON TRACK: Manny Ramirez collected his 2,000th career hit, Tim Wakefield earned his 150th major league win in his 300th Red Sox start, and David Ortiz joined Ramirez with a 2-homer game as the Red Sox defeated the Marlins 11-5 to even this 3- game series at one win apiece . . . Winners in 13 of their last 14 games, the Red Sox wrap up their stay in Miami today and continue their 10-game road trip with 4 games at Tampa Bay startin tomorrow…the jaunt concludes with 3 games against the White Sox next weekend.

THAT'S A WRAP: Into this afternoon’s 2006 interleague season finale, the Red Sox are 15-2 (.882) vs. the National League this season and are tied with the Twins (15-2) for the best record in interleague play in 2006…the best single-season winning percentage in interleague history belongs to the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals (11-1, .917) . . . With a win today, the Sox would equal the 2002 Oakland Athletics (16-2) for the most wins by a club in a single interleague year…the Twins also can reach 16 wins in 2006 . . . Boston’s 15 wins are its most ever against the National League in a single season, shattering the previous mark of 12 set in 2005…the Red Sox have won 19 of their last 21 (.905) and are 24-3 in their last 27 interleague contests beginning June 12, 2005.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 14 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 78 of 89 days in 2006 . . . Owners of the 3rd-best record in all of baseball at 49-29 (.628) behind only the Detroit Tigers (55-26) and Chicago White Sox (53-27), the Red Sox boast their best record through 78 games in 20 years, when the 1986 club went 51-27 to start the season (with a loss in game 79) . . . The Red Sox enter the day with a 4.0-game lead in the A.L. East, matching their largest margin of the season (also began Friday with a 4.0-game edge)…the Red Sox were last more than 4.0 games up on August 17 (4.5) and August 13 (5.0) in 2005.

DYNAMIC DUO: David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez each hit 2 homers games yesterday, the 2nd time they have hit 2 homers in the same game as Red Sox teammates (also September 20, 2005 at Tampa Bay) . . . Ortiz and Ramirez have now homered in the same game 37 times since becoming teammates in 2003, the 3rd-best combo in Red Sox history (Dwight Evans and Jim Rice did so in 56 games while Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr did so in 38 games)…the Red Sox are now 33-4 (.892) when Ortiz and Ramirez homer in the same game.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Jon Lester today looks to become the first Red Sox rookie starter to win his first 4 decisions since Aaron Sele won his first 6 decisions in 1993…he also aims to become the first Red Sox rookie left-handed starter to win his first 4 decisions since Rick Jones in 1976 . . . Since 1960, only 8 Red Sox left-handers have won as many as 4 starts in their rookie campaigns, most recently done by Vaughn Eshelman, who won 5 starts as a Red Sox rookie in 1995 . . . Already this season, 5 Red Sox pitchers have earned their first major league win: Lester, Lenny DiNardo, Jermaine Van Buren, Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen.

WILY MO UPDATE: Wily Mo Pena last night played in his 2nd rehab game at short-season Single-A Lowell…he went 0-for-3 and played 6.0 innings in right field…he is expected to report to Triple-A Pawtucket today…Pena underwent left wrist surgery on June 1.

STILL STREAKING: In addition to Mark Loretta’s 13-game hitting streak, Alex Gonzalez is on an 11-game tear, tied for the 4th-longest active run in the majors.

IN 2006: The Red Sox and Marlins meet this weekend for the first time since 2003, when the Sox won 2 of 3 games at Fenway Park...this 3-game weekend set is Boston’s first in Miami since 2000 (Boston won 2 of 3 games).

ALL-TIME: Boston holds a 12-8 edge in the all-time regular season series…the Red Sox are 7-5 at home and 5-3 in Florida…in 6 total series, Boston has won 2 of 3 games each of the last 5, dropping a series just once in their first meeting in 1997 (1-2).

YOU LOOK FAMILIAR.: The Red Sox have 6 players on their 25-man roster or disabled list that have spent time in South Florida…Josh Beckett (2001-05), Mike Lowell (1999-2005) and Alex Gonzalez (1998-2005) won World Series rings with the Marlins in 2003…Matt Clement spent a season here in 2001, Julian Tavarez played for Florida in 2002 and Rudy Seanez spent part of 2004 with the Marlins.

DEFENSE RECORD: The Sox made a pair of errors last night to snap their 17-game errorless streak, a new major league record . . . Boston surpassed the previous major league record set by the St. Louis Cardinals July 30-August 16, 1992…on Thursday, the Sox broke the A.L. mark of 15 previously held by the Rangers from August 4-19, 1996…Boston’s last error had occurred June 11 vs. Texas (Kevin Youkilis in the first game of a doubleheader)…the Sox cleanly handled 668 chances between errors.

PREVIOUSLY ON 24: Jonathan Papelbon Thursday matched the Red Sox single-season rookie saves record with his 24th save…Dick Radatz earned 24 saves as a rookie in 1962.

MANNY HITS 2,000: Manny Ramirez yesterday became the 241st player to reach 2,000 career hits with a 3-run homer in the first inning…he is the 13th player to reach the milestone while wearing a Red Sox uniform, the first since Wade Boggs in 1992 . . . Ramirez and the Angels’ Garret Anderson each reached 2,000 hits yesterday, the first time 2 players have reached 2,000 hits on the same day since June 19, 1973, when Cincinnati’s Pete Rose and the Angels’ Willie Davis both reached 2,000 career hits (thanks to Elias for its research assistance).

YOU CAN.T WIN THEM ALL: The Red Sox last night saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-2 loss to Florida to begin this 3-game series…Boston’s 10- game road trip continues with 4 games in Tampa Bay next week and concludes with 3 games with the defending World Champion White Sox next weekend to take the clubs into the All-Star Break . . . The 12-game winning streak matched Boston’s 3rd-longest run in club history and was its longest in nearly 11 years, a 12-gamer from August 3-14, 1995…in Red Sox history, only 2 streaks have surpassed the tear the Red Sox just completed . . .Boston’s 12-gamer was the longest by any major league club since Houston won 12 in row August 27-September 8, 2004.

NEVERTHELESS.: Despite last night’s loss, the Red Sox have won 12 of their last 13 games and completed June with a 17-9 mark, matching their record in June in 2005…the Red Sox have not been better in June since 1990 (20-9, .690) . . . The Red Sox led the majors with a .299 batting average in June…the Red Sox also paced the majors with a .306 batting average in May.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Red Sox have held sole possession of first place in the A.L. East for the last 13 days…the Sox have been in sole possession of or in a statistical tie for first place in the division for 77 of 88 days in 2006 . . . Owners of the 3rd-best record in baseball at 48-29 (.623) behind only the Tigers (55- 25) and White Sox (52-27), the Red Sox boast their best record through 77 games in 20 years, when the 1986 club went 50-27 to start the season (with a win in game 78).

INTERLEAGUE INTRIGUE: The Red Sox are 14-2 vs. the National League this season and have the highest winning percentage (.875) in interleague play this season…the best single-season winning percentage in interleague history belongs to the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals (11-1, .917)…the 2002 Oakland A’s own the record for most wins after going 16-2 . . . Boston’s 14 wins are its most ever against the National League in a single season, shattering the previous mark of 12 set in 2005…the Red Sox have won 18 of their last 20 (.900) and are 23-3 in their last 26 interleague contests beginning June 12, 2005 . . . The Red Sox still have a chance to equal the 2002 Athletics for the most-ever wins by a club in a single interleague season.

JUNE ENDED, SO LET.S COMPARE: The Red Sox ended June with a 48-29 overall record and a 3.0 game lead in the A.L. East…the Red Sox are 3.0 games better in the win-loss column than a season ago at the end of June…here’s a comparison of the 2006 Red Sox to the club from a season ago through the end of June:
