Sox agree to pay $11 million of Renteria's salary as part of trade

DALLAS -- In order to facilitate the trade that sent Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves for third-base prospect Andy Marte, the Red Sox had to agree to include $11 million in payment to the Braves.

Renteria has approximately $29.5 million remaining on his four-year, $40 million contract, signed with the Sox last winter. Additionally, there is the matter of a $3 million buyout for an option year for the 2009 season. Initially, the Braves had requested that the Red Sox assume half ($15 million) of the remaining contractual obligations. But the Sox were able to negotiate that figure down by some $4 million.

The two sides agreed on the deal shortly after midnight Wednesday, but an announcement was held until this morning since the commssioner's office must first approve any transfer of significant money as part of a player transaction.

The Red Sox passed on an opportunity to obtain Lyle Overbay from the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday when the Brewers, too, asked the Red Sox to take back some of starting pitcher Matt Clement's $17 million salary obligations. Unwilling to do that, the Sox had brief discussions with the Brewers about a deal that would have sent Bronson Arroyo, whose salary -- Arroyo is arbitration-eligible -- is considerably less. But the deal gained no traction and the Brewers later traded Overbay to the Toronto Blue Jays instead.

Sounds like a smart deal on the Sox behalf
On another note, what will the Sox do for a second catcher?

do you think that maybe there was some inside info or motivation of this.how 'bout Manny somehow winding in Camden Yards? I,for one, would welcome it with open arms.we are dealing with pesonality and integrity here........ty

I think that the Sox gave up too quickly on Renteria!! History shows that he is week in his first year, and stellar there-after. With the new report that Tejada wants out of Baltimore, and would love to play for Boston do you think that the Sox and O's could pull this deal off?
What about JT Snow platooning with Youk at first?

is there any hope of Nomar coming back to boston? it seems to make sense, if the sox need a short stop, & they now do, even with a lost step or two it seems Nomars an improvement over Renteria's 30 errors. also, from the way he finished last season theres no reason to believe that a healthy Nomar can't hit .300+ with
20-30 HR's 80+ RBI's. thats an upgrade isn't it? would Nomar consider a return to Boston?
or worst case scenario, trade Manny for Tejada and use Nomar in left. anything to any of this?

I would offer the mets a trade.....manny for beltran( I feel he could be a super star for years to come in the AL). Maybe the mets could throw in a reliever.
