The Red Sox announced today that Luis Alicea will not be offered a new contract with the organization, ending his two-year stint as the team's first-base coach. Alicea, a former major-league second baseman who played for the Red Sox in 1995, had worked as a minor-league manager in the Sox' organization from 2004-06. The team will retain its other five coaches -- bench coach Brad Mills, pitching coach John Farrell, hitting instructor Dave Magadan, third-base coach DeMarlo Hale and bullpen coach Gary Tuck. In addition, the Red Sox today announced that right-handed pitcher Chris Smith elected free agency. Smith was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on October 17. The righthander was 1-0, 7.85 in 12 appearances with Boston and 1-5, 3.19 in 37 games/4 starts with Triple-A Pawtucket in 2008. |
