BOSTON _ Kevin Youkilis was a last-minute scratch Tuesday night due to lower-back spasms and manager Terry Francona said the first baseman's availability for Wednesday's game was "50/50."

"I guess there's a hope that he would," said the manager. "But we have a day off (Thursday), so we'll see. It's 50/50 at best. I don't know if it's a smart thing to do or not."

Francona said he would check on Youkilis' status before he left the park Tuesday night.

Only minutes before the first pitch Tuesday night, Youkilis was hitting in the cage behind the Sox' dugout when his back stiffened up, so the team thought it best to replace him with Jeff Bailey.

Earlier in the day, Youkilis was named the recipient of the 2008 Roberto Clemente Award for community achievement.

Quetion, are you concerned about ALL of the injuries the Sox have had in the last 30 days? Shilling gone, Beckect? Wakefield hurt throwing at 68 mph, Lowell? and now youk AGAIN? Last week it was his shoulder from "lifting weights." Now back spasms? I think they are hurting and at the wrong time, while the Angles are firing on all cylinders.
