The Red Sox will announce at 6:30 p.m. tonight that they have signed their No. 1 draft choice, shortstop Casey Kelly of Sarasota, Fla., High School. Kelly had to make a choice between signing a professional baseball contract or playing football at the University of Tennessee.
The 30th overall selection in the draft, Kelly hit .473 (44-for-93) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 5 homers, 31 RBI and 11 steals in 2008. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound righthander took the mound in 12 games, going 8-1 with 2 saves and a 1.16 ERA. He fanned 77 and walked just 12 over 66.0 innings pitched.
