By Joe McDonald NEW YORK -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi was grilled this morning by the New York media about his decision to hold a 30-minute closed-door meeting with his club, following Thursday's 7-0 loss to the Red Sox. The first-year Yankees skipper answered almost every question by using the word "consistency." "That's what we're looking for," said Girardi. "That's how you win games. That's how you win series." It's not often a big-league major will hold meetings with professional players because the clubhouse is a place that usually polices itself. Girardi said he remembers when he played for the Yankees in the late 90s that then-manager Joe Torre would conduct such meetings when he felt it was necessary. "You play that card when you think you need to play that card," said Girardi. "I believe in our guys. We can play better. We need to keep pressing forward. . . We need to win games and that's the bottom line. . . It's going to take everyone." Girardi also said he has put the incident behind him. "It's a new day," he said. |
