BOSTON -- Before the season, Sean Casey worried about adapting to irregular playing time.

Judging by his numbers, he's coping with it well.

Casey, getting a rare start at DH Friday night, is batting .371. It's an impressive number when you consider this is the first time since 1998 that he hasn't been an everyday player.

"Maybe he's at a point in his career," said manager Terry Francona, "where his average (benefits) from not playing all the time. He's not playing with all the nicks he's been playing with his whole career."

Francona said he wished he had been able to provide Casey with more playing time in the first half, but Manny Ramirez' ongoing hmastring issues have limited Casey's opportunities at DH.

Still, said Francona, "when you put his bat in the lineup, it's a nice feeling."
