BOSTON _ Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo will be out 4-6 weeks with a severe quad tear. He suffered the injury in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Orioles Friday night at Fenway Park. As a result, Jed Lowrie has been recalled from Pawtucket.

"It's bad," said Lugo. "It's a tear. . . It's disappointing because this is the best I have felt since I've been here. It took me about a year and a half to start feeling comfortable. I thought I was getting my swing back. I felt good in the field and my body felt good, so when something like this happens, it's disappointing."

Lugo was attempting to beat out a base hit when he felt a "pop" and after he crossed the first-base bag, he was in obvious pain as he lay on the ground.

"I just knew it wasn't good," he said.

After the game a team doctor told him it was a tear, but the shortstop didn't believe it, so he had an MRI taken this morning that confirmed the bad news.

Lugo is sporting a brace on his left leg and is waiting to meet with the club's medical staff at 5 p.m. to discuss the rehan process.

"I'll be back for the playoffs," he said. "At least I'll be fresh for the World Series."

As Lugo stood in the corner of the clubhouse, teammate and good friend David Ortiz spoke about the shortstop's injury.

"It's hard to see when you're boy goes down like that," said Ortiz. "I know he felt the same way when I went down. You can't really control injuries. No body works harder than that guy."
