Practice peek

Hey all --

The Patriots are holding a rare Monday practice today, as the team re-assembled after their five-day bye week break. The session is being held inside Gillette Stadium.

Troy Brown was in a practice uniform for the first time this season, and number 80 resumed his usual spot in the stretching "formation" -- on the front line of the offense, right next to Tom Brady.

Missing from practice today were Mel Mitchell, Eugene Wilson and Eric Alexander.

The practice players of the week are: Ray Ventrone, C.J. Jones, Kelley Washington and Rashad Baker.

Locker room access has been bumped back to 3:45 p.m.; we'll try to post an update after that.

I'm really worried about the Patriots running game. It seems they have a lot of depth in other positions, and a major risk at RB. I'm not convinced that Maroney can stay healthy. I just can't imagine the Pats are not looking for some help, or at very least, insurance there. Losing Morris was a tough blow. Has there been any activity there? Is there anyone available? I wish they could find some downhill guy who could beat up the defense a little bit, and set Maroney up.

Art - there is someone available -- Corey Dillon. Dillon's agent said he started working out after Morris got hurt, but BB is on the record as saying he's fine with the backs they have. You're right, though -- to me, that is one of the few weaknesses they have. If Maroney is patient, hits the holes and goes, I think he can be very effective. When he starts dancing behind the line, he gets nowhere. But assuming the passing games stays as it is, if they can get 85-100 yards rushing (total) per game to keep defenses honest, they'll be ok. Besides, do you think any team will try to take away the run and force them to throw?? - smy

We all know how extended days off for a hot team affected the Colorado Rockies.
Please, please, Bill, work their butts off this week!

Mike - Most of the players were in pads yesterday, and I suspect they will be again tomorrow when they return to the practice field. Believe me, BB will not let them start slacking now... - smy
