Caldwell released
Hey all --
The Patriots have confirmed an earlier report that wide receiver Reche Caldwell was released.
The 28-year old, five year veteran was the Pats' leading receiver last year, with 61 catches for 760 yards and four touchdowns.

Caldwell had to be released. He was to the Patriots what Quinn Buckner was to the Red Sox last year in the playoffs against the Colts. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but you know what I mean. If I had to hang the loss one one particular player however, it would be Reche Caldwell, the drive stopper. Guys like Gaffney and Brown and others tend to step up in situations like that while Caldwell tends to step down. True it wasn't fair for him to be relied upon as a first receiver, but what people will always remember about him is those two easy catches which he couldn't make against the Colts. It's too bad there isn't room for him in a crowded field of recievers, but... When he dropped those two balls I figured that was his ticket out of town, and apparently that has played out as it often does. It's a cruel world, especially in NE when you don't have consistency.
Art - I completely agree about Reche's performance in the AFC title game having an impact on his future with New England. He also didn't have a great camp and doesn't play special teams, which if you are a #3 or 4 (or lower) receiver, you have to be able to do. - smy
