Yup, I'm a dummy

Hey all --

Even though I already posted a comment (to my own blog. Weird.), I'll do it here too.

Yes, I was wrong/misinformed: a BAC of .204 is not 20 percent like I said it is.

But be easy: I'm a sports girl. If the Celtics have a winning percentage of .204, it means they only won 20 percent of their games...

At any rate, Jerramy Stevens still put himself, and more importantly, anyone else on the road that night, in grave danger.

Back to great weather...

Hey all --

We are back home after a week visiting relatives in the ATL (that's Atlanta for the non-hip-hop set), where it was 83 degrees on Saturday, and we come home to...clouds and chill and rain. Can I cover the Pats from there you think??

Thankfully, while we were gone there was no major news with New England, which meant we could actually relax a bit. We did keep up on things, though, and are a bit upset we missed the chance to talk to Ben Watson about his USO trip to Iraq. From the stories we read, Watson learned a great deal from his experience.

On the NFL front, it seems former Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens is making a late run at Pacman Jones for his Dope of the Month award. A blood-alcohol level of .204?? Not only is that stupid, it can get you killed.

But Stevens apparently isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. The man is on the open market, and not only is he facing DUI and marijuana possession charges, but the association at the Seattle-area condo where he lived wanted to kick him out for his many non-neighborly incidents.

Since 1998, Stevens has also: allegedly broken a man's jaw with a baseball bat; allegedly drugged and raped a 19-year old girl when he was in college; allegedly drove his car into a retirement home and then fled the scene; and had another alleged DUI in 2003.

With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell looking to take a hard line on player conduct after the many arrests and incidents involving NFL players in recent months, we're betting the commish is telling teams to stay away from Stevens.

Or at least we hope he is.

Getting back to the Patriots, we're going to try, as always, to stay on top of things and get you information as quickly as possible.

That, and hope spring weather comes real soon.

Report: Doctors find serious damage to Maroney's shoulder

Doctors found significant damage to the shoulder of Patriots running back Laurence Maroney while performing offseason surgery, The Boston Herald reports today, quoting an unnamed league source. The nature and long-term impact of Maroney's injury are unclear, according to the report.

With Corey Dillon gone, Maroney figures to enter his second NFL season as the Patriots' go-to back. In his rookie season, the University of Minnesota product was impressive while sharing the burden with Dillon. But rib and knee injuries took their toll, and he saw limited playing time during the Patriots' playoff run.

Welcome to New England, Donte...

Hey all --

We just finished up a conference call with new Patriots receiver Donte Stallworth, and it must have had him re-thinking his decision to come here to New England.

Usually, these things start off with an easy question, asking how the process went that brought him to the Pats, but right off the bat, he was asked about his reported feud with old/new teammate Kelley Washington that dates back to their days at the University of Tennessee.

Then he was asked about the report in a Philadelphia paper that he's a member of the league's substance abuse program (he said that's "in the past"), if the Eagles didn't want him any more, and about the contract he signed with the Pats, which pays him pretty well this year, but could pay him big-time bucks next year.

Welcome to town!

Eventually, he was asked questions about coming to the Patriots, and Stallworth said he talked to Tom Brady and Deion Branch about the team, and said Branch had good things to say about the organization despite the way his time here ended.

As for his role, Stallworth said he doesn't see himself "as a number one receiver. I'm just another guy that can make plays."

Spokesman disputes report on Welker deal

Quoted in The Boston Globe, NFL Players Association spokesman Carl Francis says the union has asked for details of the Patriots' trade with the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Wes Welker, but is not concerned that the deal violates the league's collective bargaining agreement.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported yesterday that the players association was looking into the deal, and noted complaints by Welker's agent that his client had lost money in the deal.

Report: Players union unhappy with Pats' trade for Welker

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported today that the National Football League Players Association is concerned that the Patriots and Dolphins violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement while putting together the recent trade of receiver Wes Welker and has asked the NFL Management Council for an explanation.

The newspaper quoted a source who said the trade" may have violated the CBA rule that says one club can't offer the player's former team anything that would [sway] that team from matching their offer."

Pats reportedly eye another ex-Raven star

The Metrowest Daily News is reporting today that the New England Patriots are interested in adding 28-year-old Edgerton Hartwell to their revamped linebacking corps. The report cites an unnamed league source.

Hartwell was a rising star with the Baltimore Ravens until March 2005, when he signed a rich deal with the Atlanta Falcons. But injuries contributed to making that deal a big disappointment for Atlanta. The Falcons cut Hartwell on Friday.

New England has already signed another former Baltimore star, Adalius Thomas, to play linebacker next season and beyond. They also let Tully Banta-Cain go to the San Francisco 49ers.

You can't keep a Brady rumor down for long

What's all this talk about Tom Brady?

The Boston Herald and then the Globe's Boston.com ran with an item in the Brazilian web site Glamurama.com.br

There's not much to it, as you can see, but it was the most e-mailed story and most searched for item on Boston.com this afternoon.

Here's the substance (if you can use that word) of the report in translation and in the original:

Telephone Without A Wire
March 7; 5:13 pm

Bomb! Bomb! Bomb! It just arrived at Glamurama (magazine),
via a top secret anonymous phone call, a news flash that Gisele
Bundchen could be pregnant.

Its all very recent, but the topic has already been passed amongst
the small mouths of her top most intimate friends.

Isn't it going to be a very uncomfortable situation with the
pregnancy of the ex-girlfriend of Tom Brady, Gisele's actual
boyfriend?

Gisele & Tom, could it be true?
=======================================
Telefone sem fio
07/03 - 18:13 - Bomba! Bomba! Bomba!

Both the Herald and Boston.com expanded their reports with talk about Brady's former girlfriend, actor Bridget Moynahan, who is pregnant, and a review of the celebrity sightings of Brady and Bundchen.

Welker introduced

Hey all --

Wes Welker recently finished up a conference call with the Patriots' media corps. Though for some reason we had a hard time hearing all of it, here's bits and pieces of what we did hear from New England's newest receiver.

On coming into the league as an undrafted longshot and now a veteran with a nice contract:
"Coming into the league, I was just hoping to play for a couple of years. I wanted work on getting better, doing things to make me a better football player."

On where he feels he is best suited, in the slot or as an outside receiver:
"I think I'm better suited for the slot, I'm more comfortable in the slot, but through practice I knew all three positions on the field, so I was comfortable with everything."

Welker also said that the second meeting of the year between the Pats and Dolphins, in December, was the first time a team double-teamed him every time he lined up. "It was a frustrating day."

Daniel Graham a Denver Bronco

Former New England Patriots tight end Daniel Graham has signed a 5-year, $30-million deal with the Denver Broncos, according to John Clayton of ESPN. Clayton reported that the contract includes $15 million in guaranteed money.

Graham will be joining the team that his father, Tom Graham, played for in the 1970s.

The 28-year-old Graham has played all five of his NFL seasons with the Patriots. Last season, he caught 21 passes for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns in 12 games. Over the weekend, the Patriots signed veteran tight end Kyle Brady; they also have younger players Benjamin Watson and David Thomas at the position.

Philly, New England vie for Stallworth's services

In Philadelphia and here in New England, they're trying to sort through the conflicting reports surrounding the future of free-agent wide receiver Donte Stallworth.

Stallworth, who the Eagles picked up before last season in a trade with New Orleans, visited New England yesterday. There were reports -- apparently erroneous -- that Stallworth left with a contract offer. Certainly, New England would be interested in having Stallworth join new addition Wes Welker in the team's receiving corps.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, there were also inaccurate reports that the Eagles had made a bid for Stallworth. It turns out that Stallworth's agent, Drew "No Comment" Rosenhaus, did have discussions yesterday with Eagles officials after it was revealed in the Inquirer that Stallworth is in the NFL's substance-abuse program. According to the newspaper, the Eagles wanted to make clear that they did not leak the story.

The 26-year-old Stallworth made 38 receptions for 725 yards (an impressive 19.1 yards-per-catch average) and 5 touchdowns in 12 games with Philadelphia last year. He missed four games due to injury.

Stallworth's free-agent tour is still scheduled to make stops with the Tennessee Titans and the Miami Dolphins.

Harrison talks Pats, golf

Hey all --

We had the chance to spend time with Rodney Harrison today, and it was, as always, an enjoyable experience.

The safety was the keynote speaker at the New England Regional Turfgrass Convention, which drew a great many golf course superintendents. Harrison came north -- and was not happy about the weather -- from Atlanta, where he was golfing yesterday and had plans to be golfing again tomorrow.

In a wide-ranging, 45-minute speech, Harrison talked about his upbringing in Chicago, the story of how he came to play in New England, the difficult 18 months or so he's endured since tearing all three ligaments in his left knee in Sept. 2005, Bill Belichick, Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss, and even Freddie Mitchell.

Harrison told a story from his days at private Marian Catholic High, and a day that changed his life.

"I was about the poorest kid at the school. My mom, she worked two and three jobs, but she drove a Chevette. It was tan with a red door, and there was wood on the floor on the passenger's side because if there wasn't, there was a Flintstones thing going on where you could drive with your feet.

"One day the car broke down, and I'm hoping no one from school comes by. (But) kids came by, throwing water, spitting, laughing. It inspired me. I told my mother, I'm going to get an education, you're going to be proud of me, and when I get to the NFL, you'll never break down again."

One of Harrison's first purchases when he started collecting NFL paychecks was a Mercedes for his mother.

During the Pats' regular season finale against Tennessee -- Harrison's second game back from a broken shoulder blade suffered against the Colts in November -- the cheap shots and play of the Titans led Harrison to tell Artrell Hawkins that he didn't "feel too good" and to protect himself. A few plays later, Bobby Wade dove at Harrison's right knee, partially tearing his medial collateral ligament and effectively ending his season.

Harrison said he hasn't heard from Wade since the hit -- which the NFL ruled was a clean block -- and that he would answer if Wade called. And he will likely never forget what he saw as he laid on the grass at LP Field writing in pain.

"After I got hit by him, I'm screaming in pain, I look up and on their sideline, I see guys laughing and joking. That was disappointing that they were so ruthless. But like I said, during the playoffs they were at home just like me."

New England's win knocked the Titans out of postseason contention.

For the record, Harrison's best round of golf was an 88 at the TPC of Boston, when he beat Tedy Bruschi by a shot. His handicap is down to a 16, which he's proud of, and he said that Tom Brady is definitely the best golfer on the Patriots.

There will be more from Harrison in tomorrow's Journal and online.

Banta-Cain signs with San Francisco

Former New England Patriots linebacker Tully Banta-Cain has signed with the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN.

Terms of the deal are not known.

Banta-Cain, 26, who found his starting job gone when the Patriots acquired free agent Adalius Thomas, had by far the most productive of his four NFL seasons in 2006. He made 42 tackles and registered 5.5 sacks for the season.

Joining the 49ers will be a homecoming for Banta-Cain, a native of Mountain View who attended the University of California.

Thomas: $20 million guaranteed

Hey all --

Now that Adalius Thomas' contract is official, the financial details are starting to come out.

It is a five-year deal, and Thomas will get $20 million guaranteed -- over the first two years of the contract. He receives a $12 million signing bonus this year as well as a $900,000 base salary. In 2008, he'll get an $8 million option bonus and the same base salary as this year.

For most NFL contracts, the first three years are what matter money-wise. That hasn't been the case so much with the Pats, so for them to give Thomas so much up front shows how much they wanted him.

Florida newspaper reports TE Kyle Brady is headed to Pats

It apparently didn't take the Patriots long to find a replacement for the expected-to-depart Daniel Graham.

According to the Florida Times-Union, veteran tight end Kyle Brady reached agreement with New England Friday night on a two-year, $5.3 million contract.

''My whole thing was to go out and find a team that wanted me and would show that by the contract they were offering," Brady told The Times-Union in a phone interview from a Boston restaurant. "Plus, a team that's within reach of a Super Bowl, and this one always seems to be among the AFC elite . . . You can't get a better combination of stability in terms of the quarterback [Tom Brady] and the head coach [Bill Belichick]."

ESPN radio: Graham-to-Broncos done deal

Hey all --

ESPN Radio just reported that Daniel Graham will stay home, and has agreed to a deal with the Broncos that includes a $10 million signing bonus. No word on the other terms of the deal.

Graham must have had a change of heart, because during the season he expressed to us that he thought it would be difficult to play for Denver -- where his father, Tom, played, and where he grew up -- and if he played there, it would be at the end of his career, as a sentimental kind of thing.

But, hey, if we were offered $10 million guaranteed, we'd learn to deal with whatever perceived pressure there might be too.

Associate Dope of the Month: Manny Arora

Hey all --

Who is Manny Arora, you ask? Well, he's Pacman Jones' lawyer.

And we can totally see why Jones employs him.

Arora told The Tennessean today that Jones "is stressed beyond belief." Really? We can't imagine why. Well, maybe we can: being arrested/questioned by police 10 times in two years, remembering when your next league drug test will be so you can stop doing pot in time , allegedly threatening to kill a strip club bouncer after a melee broke out and before someone who may or may not be part of your posse returns to said strip club and shoots said bouncer (plus two others), and even getting your Mama arrested for marijuana possession (even if the charges were dropped)...

...Oh, and then there's that minor issue of making sure you can pull all this off and still keep the job that's supposed to pay you $1.3 million in base salary for the coming year.

Yeah, I guess that's stressful.

But listen to Arora and tell us he's not worth every penny Jones is paying him:

"No matter how the media may want to paint it, nobody gets that lucky," Arora said, referring to the 10 times Jones has been arrested or questioned by police with no charges filed. "He's just made some poor decisions with the people he's associated with, and they're trying to drag him down."

Yes. It is everyone else's fault! Of course!

As an associate of our Dope of the Month, Manny Arora is our first-ever Associate Dope of the Month.

A. Thomas headed to New England after all?

Hey all --

NFL Network's Adam Schefter told WEEI this morning that he believes linebacker Adalius Thomas will end up with the Patriots.

That goes counter to what we've heard over the last couple of days, when it seemed Thomas was headed to San Francisco. And it also goes counter, apparently, to what Schefter said on NFLN just last night -- less than 24 hours ago, he was forecasting the 29-year old outside linebacker headed to the 49ers.

Thomas got to know Bill Belichick at the Pro Bowl and said of Belichick that week, "You always hear about how he’s a mean guy, but it’s real interesting to see how he reacts with different players, how he gets comfortable over here. He’s actually a really nice guy. I was surprised.”

But San Fran head coach Mike Nolan was Thomas' defensive coordinator in Baltimore, and the 49ers have more room under the salary cap -- about $42 million -- than any other team in the league.

Though he does already have a Super Bowl ring -- Thomas was a rookie when the Ravens won it all in 2000 -- he played a bit role that year, playing in just three games. And New England is seemingly closer to winning a title than the 49ers. But Thomas, like Rosevelt Colvin before him, probably would have to sign for less than top-dollar if he came to New England.

We'll see what happens...

Randall Gay gets second-round tender

Hey all --

The Boston Globe is reporting that the Patriots have offered cornerback Randall Gay the one-year, $1.35 million restricted free agent tender.

It is the same tender Wes Welker got from Miami, meaning any team that wants to sign Gay to a better deal would have to surrender a second-round draft pick to New England.

The undrafted corner out of LSU has struggled with injuries the last two seasons, after starting in Super Bowl XXXVIII his rookie year.

A. Thomas to 49ers?

Hey all --

We're hearing that linebacker Adalius Thomas, coveted by many a Pats fans, will be signing with the San Francisco 49ers a little after midnight, when his free agency becomes official.

Word is, Thomas will get a signing bonus somewhere in the $12-15 million range, which reflects the increased cap. Last year, the Seahawks signed backer Julian Peterson to a seven-year, $54-million deal that included an $11.5 million signing bonus. The contract also got him $5.5 million in roster bonuses over the first three years of the deal.

Welker receives tender from Dolphins

Hey all --

One potential player of interest for the Patriots, Dolphins' restricted free agent receiver/return man Wes Welker, reportedly has been tendered at the second-round level.

That means that Welker receives $1.35 million from the Dolphins, though he can still sign with another team if it offers him a more lucrative deal and Miami does not match that offer within seven days. If Welker leaves Miami, the Dolphins receive a second-round draft pick from the team that signed him (for a player who was originally undrafted).

New England has four RFAs: corner Randall Gay, O-linemen Billy Yates and Gene Mruczkowski, and safety Rashad Baker.

Dope of the month: Pacman Jones

Hey all --

We know we usually have a dope of the week, but since we haven't chosen one since early January (Rex "It was New Year's Eve and I wanted to party like everyone else instead of prepare to do my job" Grossman), and given the sheer magnitude of his stupidity, Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones is getting a special dope of the month shout-out.

Actually, it spans two months: February and March. With all the news that's coming out on this clown, it would take a lot for someone to unseat him in the next 30 days.

Oh, where to begin?? Let's start with the most recent news: Jones received subpoenas for felony and misdemeanor obstruction of justice to appear in court in Fayetteville, Ga. because of an incident in Feb. 2006.

Fayetteville police chief Steve Heaton told The Tennessean newspaper: "One of our officers was involved in a traffic stop with him, and after Pacman and others ran into a home, there was a physical altercation between him and the officer, and he was involved in that. He was arrested for that."

The charges were not immediately filed. A month after that incident, Jones was apparently picked up for marijuana possession in the same county, but those charges were dismissed.

And lest we forget, there's still the investigation in Las Vegas, where Jones has been mentioned as being a friend of the gunman in a triple shooting at a strip club during the NBA's All-Star weekend. One of the men shot is paralyzed from the waist down.

Before we go further, we should say that at this point, Jones has not been named a suspect or person of interest in the shooting.

Jones and his hangers-on (a number estimated between 6 and 20) were at the Minxx Gentlemen's Club at a party also attended by hip-hop stars Nelly and Jermaine Dupri. A fight broke out -- apparently among the dancers to begin with -- while Jones was throwing $1 bills into the air over the dancers in a (foolish) practice known as "making it rain."

(There's even a rap song about it. Sometimes I am so ashamed to say I am part of the hip-hop generation, so please don't shoot the messenger on the content of those "lyrics.")

Not only did Jones allegedly hit one of the dancers, he also allegedly told a bouncer who had put him in a submission hold, "you're going to die tonight."

The club owner said one of the men forced out of the club with Jones returned later and shot the bouncer, another man and a female patron.

By The Tenneseean's count, Jones has now been involved in 10 off-field incidents since the Titans drafted him in the first round of the 2005 draft.

I understand that the NFL is a business, and the bottom line is winning, and that Pacman Jones -- on the field -- is talented. But at what point does dancing with the devil become too hazardous? Many observers/followers of the NFL believe that the league needs to start punishing players who have a high incidence off-field problems -- Jones, the Bengals' Chris Henry, the Chargers' Terrence Kiel -- and add my voice to them.

You can't run around thinking the law doesn't apply to you just because you're an NFL player. You think you have so much money? Pay one of those flunkies that follow you all over the place to be your designated driver instead of getting picked up for DUI. Don't walk into a club and think you own the place/can do/get whatever you want just because you make a little money.

Here's an easy one: remember the lessons your mama, or daddy, or grandma, or church tried to instill in you. I don't think any of them would advocate getting into tussles with cops or punching women in the face.

Okay, rant over.
