Narrow River stripers on the fly

Following a fly-fishing trip to the Narrow River yesterday, Ed Lombardo sent this report today:

“We fished at both Middle and Sprague bridges. We started at Sprague Bridge and got there at around 4:30 p.m. The tide was still incoming and we didn't get any fish to take our offerings. We left at 6:15 to get a sandwich, and came back to the river at 7. At that time the river was at the ebb, and we could see a good amount of silversides, two to three inches long, both under the surface and jumping on top.

"The good news is that they weren't schooled up. Just as the tide started going out, we started taking fish. And as the tide picked up in speed, the bite got better. This first hour and fifteen minutes of the tide change produced the best action of the night. We took a good number of schoolies and one keeper around 29 inches.

“With high tide at a height of only 3.0 feet the outgoing was moving extremely slow. At 8:45 p.m. we moved to Middle Bridge and fished to 10:30 without one fish. Again I believe that the reason was very slow moving water. The height of the tide tonight will be a little better, faster. I would get there at 7:30 p.m., and this should produce some enjoyable fishing.”

Tom,

Could you comment on what patterns and sizes they were using? I am new to this area and wanted to get some advice on the subject.

Thanks,

Chris

A little quiz for all of you. When did fly fishing for stripers first start in Narrow River? I will give the answer after I have gotten some guesses. John
