New spin on the Wood

Rick Harris of Cranston took his six-year-old son, Michael, on a fishing trip to the Wood River yesterday and sent this terrific report:

"Took Michael out on opening day at the Wood, and he got his limit, and has been asking me since to take him again.

"I am a fly fisher normally, and with the weather autumn-like cool on Saturday and Sunday, I figured the trout would be a little active.

"Michael woke me at 6:30 a.m. yesterday, and we headed to Arcadia. We went to our favorite section of the river found off the Twin Pines back road. I set him up with two different spinners, a Rooster Tail and a blue shaded spinner. I figured if anything he would improve his casting.

"What a time we had from 8:15 to 11:00. We caught and released eight fish: two beautiful browns, two brookies and four rainbows. The best of the rainbows jumped out of the water and put up a great fight. It ws about a 1.5-pound fish.

"Best of all, Michael loves wetting his hands, holding the fish and gently releasing it back to the water, remembering to wag its rear fin as he does.

"One of my best times ever on the Wood especially since it was with my son and I got to watch the excitement on his face a he learns what a beautiful place the Wood is along with the sport of trout fishing.

"By the way there were many grasshoppers and spiders along the banks but I was amazed at how aggressively the trout were hitting the spinners. The river was low in most areas but the fish obviously are congregating in the deeper pools."

From the charter boat Patty-J, Nick Chagnon sent this report yesterday:

"Fishing continues to be great around Block Island. The water seems to be cooling a bit and this may be the cause of the improvement in the fishing since the beginning of August.

"Saturday was a tough day due to howling northwest winds. We couldn't get across to Block Island and had a tough time finding bass on the South Shore.

"Today was the complete opposite, a perfect day. Though we started out slow on the North End, we moved to the Southwest corner of Block and caught our limit of bass by about 10 a.m. After that, we went fluking south of the island and got about a dozen and a half fluke up to about 5 pounds with some small seabass mixed in."
