Caught these on live eels on the Southwest Ledge on July 22. These were our first Block Island stripers ever. Not a bad day. Tom Carlton and Freddie Blanchard

Bait boosts lower Bay bite
Tim Clark of Wickford Rodworks reports:
After a couple of tough weeks in the surf, we finally have an uptick with bass and blues mixing it up from Jamestown north to Allens Harbor. They're feeding on rainbait and (Yes!) peanut bunker. The arrival of peanuts usually precipitates a couple of pretty good weeks and some isolated periods of intense blitzes.
The fluking will keep you scratching your head. Some guys are ready to move on while others are having a terrific -- and long -- season. Deep water and the willingness to move around to find a productive piece of bottom are the keys to getting good fish.
Lots of scup are biting at Beavertail and Fort Weatherill, but there aren't a lot of biggies.
Tube-and-worm guys are still getting a steady pick from the rocky shoreline of Narragansett, and some of the kayakers are getting fish to 40 inches. Surf casters are also getting some good fish with eels in the same areas, though it may take and entire night or longer to get a good bite.
Speaking of bites, the bugs are brutal. Don't forget to bring bug dope!
