Bruins sign first-round draft pick Kessel

The Boston Bruins today announced that they had signed their first-round draft pick, 18-year-old Phil Kessel, to a multi-year contract.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli raved that Kessel is a player with "world-class speed and gifted offensive talents."

Doherty is a 6’1” 190-pound forward who co-led the Southern Professional Hockey League’s (SPHL) Jacksonville Barracudas in scoring with 46 points off 25 goals and 21 assists in 55 games. He opened last season with the SPHL’s Pee Dee Cyclones (Florence, SC) and tallied 13 goals and 8 assists for 21 points in 27 games before being traded to Jacksonville, where he contributed 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 28 games. Doherty ranked tied for second in SPHL in rookie goal scoring (25) and tied for fourth in rookie point totals (46). He also led SPHL rookies in shots (203). The Wakefield, Massachusetts native turned pro last season after closing out a stellar college career at NCAA Div. II Southern New Hampshire University. Doherty was the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year following the 2004/2005 season and was a Joe Concannon Hockey Award Finalist after producing a conference leading 26 goals and 21 assists for 47 points in 28 games. The 24 year-old racked up 56 goals and 46 assists for 102 points in 104 college games from 01/02 to 04/05.
