Tried out Wachusett Brewing Company's Summer Breeze over the weekend. It was an impulsive selection while drooling at the local beer cooler Sunday, but just the name alone made it a good pairing with the burgers I was about to slather with grilled, chipotle-spiced onions and mushrooms. Should have stuck with an old standby, though.

Don't get me wrong. The beer was fine, but it did not conjure summer breezes on my palate. It was more plain ale than a typical summer brew. The brewery claims a hint of lemon in the flavor, but I missed it. Maybe I used too much chipotle powder. BeerAdvocate.com reviews are mixed, too. Among local contenders in the seasonal brew category, I still prefer Samuel Adams' Summer Ale or Harpoon's UFO Hefeweizen.

Speaking of Samuel Adams, I also tried their Black Lager. Reminiscent of Saranac's Black and Tan, with a slightly sharper edge. Personally, I'm just as happy with a darker beer in the summer as I am with wheat beers and their brethren. So I thought this Sam Adams worked just as well with a grilled burger pairing as any other beer.

Having gone to college in Worcester, I've sampled many a Wachusett beverage. I was overjoyed when they finally started packaging their beers in 12-ounce bottles rather than the 64-ounce growlers, as it suddenly became much easier to find them at stores closer to home.

I'm a fan. Wachusett makes some of my favorite beers, and the Summer Breeze quite possibly tops my list. Honestly, I've run into a few 6-packs that may have strayed off the quality control path a bit. It might be worth one more try.

If you're looking for something a little different in that same lemony sunshine genre of beers, the folks at The Abbey ( http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/5390/ ) in Providence introduced me to an outstanding Belgian wheat beer called Wittekerke ( http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/718/2477/ ). Just thinking about it makes me wish I were in front of my grill right now -- spatula in one hand and beer in the other.
