Report: New England fish stocks in bad shape

PORTLAND, Maine -- A new report from a Maine environmental group says nearly half of the fish stocks in New England's ocean waters are in jeopardy from overfishing.

The report, which was released by Environment Maine on behalf of the Marine Fish Conservation Network, says that only 10 fish stocks were known to be healthy in 2004.

That's down from 13 healthy fish stocks in 2001.

-- The Associated Press

The report also says only 13 percent of the fish populations nationwide are deemed to be healthy.

The study blames ineffective management for the poor status of fishery resources.

Here in Florida commercial fisherman are still complaining about grouper size and catch limits. Yet, one can go to an oriental market in this state and find whole frozen grouper for sale that are six inches under the domestic legal limit. Imported from Venezuela and other species from Indo-Neshia. Several years back commercial gill nets were banned and fishing has improved greatly. A long stretch of our gulf coast from Mannatee to Crystal River has less than 6 DNR inspectors policing landlubber and off shore receational fishing. Size and bag limits are notoriously disregarded. Species like mangrove snapper are scarce in spots where they were one plentiful. I have been sport fishiing at public fihing piers such as the one thousand foot long Potters Pier at Ft. DeSoto Park for 20 years. I stopped fihing there on the weekends. It is overcrowded and the total disregard for size and bag limits is rampant. People needlessly destroy such fish as stingrays, catfish ,dogfish and small hammerhead sharks. The blood and guts will remain until the next rainstorm and if your not careful it can be slippery under foot. Too often an aluminum can is disgarded into the water and monofiliment line that was birdnested is rolling along the deck like a Texas tumbleweed, a real hazard for pelicans and comerants and small children. The only good thing I can mention at this point is that two weeks ago I witnessed two blue fish caught at the pier, very unusal and a hope that the species will me migrating into the Gulf. Finally 2 years ago I made a trip to Nothern California ,Trinidad, beautiful spot, I arrived on Sept.17th. I wasn't aware fishing season closed on Sept. 15th. Maybe thats what New Englnd needs.
