Judge: Child-care workers not effectively state employees
PROVIDENCE -- A Superior Court judge has sided with the Carcieri administration in rejecting a state Labor Board ruling that home-based child-care workers are effectively state workers because they are so highly controlled by the state.
-- Journal State House writer Katherine Gregg
In his decision today, Judge Daniel A. Procaccini wrote, "The board's decision offends any reasonable notion of orderly and responsible expansion of the state's work force." He added that the board's analysis, "if accepted, may be applied to a myriad of groups that supply goods or services to the state."
The workers were seeking state employee status so they could bargain collectively and pursue other benefits of state employment.

There would be a can of worms opened far too large for the unconnected tax payer to handle if they were given that type status.

Hey, we are ALL controlled by the state to a large degree, even private company employees are governed by state and fed rules, etc. But these folks are contractors not employees.

Disturbing that it took a judge to finally shed some common sense on this matter. Just goes to show you how absolutely and completely out of touch the politicians and their puppets on various boards are with reality and the needs of the average Rhode Islander. When when when will fellow citizens wake up and stop re-electing the same old democratic thieves?

Well done - such a clear, concise statement. The taxpayer's pockets are not so deep these days. Thank you judge.

These child care workers shouldn't be state employees, but they should be allowed to unionize. Why not? Everyone else can.

We are all in someway controlled by the state, but we are not entitled to any benefits given by the state.
I am glad for the ruling. Otherwise I would have been forced to open a day care as well!!!!!!
We all can use good healthcare and good benefits.

The judges ruling was for the tax payers also, not just the Carcieri administration.
