Games postponed or canceled due to conditions
Sporting events, from high school to pro games, are being altered due to the wildfires in the Southland.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been meeting with Chargers president Dean Spanos and others concerning San Diego's game Sunday against Houston. The game is scheduled to be played in San Diego. However, Qualcomm Stadium is being used as an evacuation site.
Goodell said the options include playing the game in Los Angeles, at Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium — the Cardinals’ former home — at Texas Stadium in Dallas or Reliant Stadium, the Texans’ home field.
The San Diego State-BYU football game scheduled for Saturday at Qualcomm has been postponed to Dec. 1.
Poor air quality prompted the postponement of virtually all outdoor high school sporting events today.
The California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section sent a memo this morning to high school athletic directors, advising “all residents, and particularly school officials, to curtail outdoor activities if they can see or smell smoke or see falling ash.”
The Riverside County Office of Education advised districts in southwest Riverside County to cancel all indoor and outdoor sporting events for today. Some indoor events, including girls volleyball, went on as scheduled.
Rim of the World High was closed and all athletic events were canceled until at least Friday. The school’s football game Friday night at Hesperia Sultana likely will be postponed, Athletic Director David Ochs said.
Among other postponements:
* The Southwestern League boys water polo tournament was postponed until Wednesday.
* The Mountain View League boys water polo tournament was pushed to Thursday.
* The Ivy League golf prelims were postponed, with a makeup date to be determined.
Decisions on Wednesday’s events will be made Wednesday morning, officials said, but the Citrus Belt League golf finals, Southwestern League golf finals and an Ivy League cross country meet between Riverside Poly, Riverside North and Riverside La Sierra have already been pushed back to Thursday in hopes the air quality will improve by then.
The status of football games for Thursday and Friday has yet to be determined. CIF-SS director of sports information Thom Simmons said there have been talks, but given the uncertainty of what conditions will be in a few days, no decisions have been made.
