Fighting to save homes near Running Springs

At 2:35 p.m., fire raced up a ridge toward several homes on Bluebird Drive, just south of Highway 18 near Running Springs.

The flames chewed through trees and heavy brush to be within 100 yards of the houses. Helicopters attacked the fire with water drops, hitting the flames and the homes.

Just before 3 p.m., a small car pulled out of the driveway of one of the homes.
The flames surrounded the homes. The choppers kept dropping water amid gusting wind.
