They Don't Call it Los Angeles INTERNATIONAL Airport for Nothin'
Alitalia Airlines has announced it will fly nonstop between LAX and Rome five times a week starting in June, according to Los Angeles World Airports.
Apparently its now the only nonstop flight between California and the Italian city.
LA/Ontario International Airport gets a shout out in the press release announcement despite the news having little to do with the Inland destination.
"Gaining new and increased international service at LAX and LA/Ontario International is a top priority for my Administration because of the substantial contribution these flights make to the economy of Southern California. Alitalia's new non-stop service to Rome is a prime example of the type of air service we want to attract to our airports." -- LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Other international flights added to LAX's roster according to a press release:
Starting March 30:
Air France: seven weekly round-trip flights to London
EVA Air: three additional round-trip flights to Tapei with a stop in Osaka
Starting Summer 2009 (just in time for ... wait, a year after the Olympics??)
Air China: seven additional round-trip flights to Beijing

I wish they had those flights when I did my trip last year. It could have saved me the grief of having to fly Air France and transferring through Paris-Charles DeGaulle, which still ranks as the single worst travel experience of my life.
