Amtrak to Step Up Security

(Associated Press)

I'm a little surprised this didn't happen sooner following train bombings in Madrid and London, but security is now being souped up at Amtrak stations -- first in the Northeast and likely elsewhere soon after.

This is what the Associated Press is reporting:

"Amtrak passengers will have to submit to random screening of carry-on bags in a major new security push that will include officers with automatic weapons and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling platforms and trains, the railroad planned to announce Tuesday."

From Oct. 2005 to Sept. 2006 Amtrak had 24.3 million passengers. Airlines in 2007 had 677 million passengers.

The story doesn't mention if certain items will be barred from baggage ala TSA and their liquids policy. Ice picks, swords and vaguely "fragile or valuable items" are already barred.
