As we've done over the past few weeks, here's another unsolved slaying being worked by the San Bernardino County sheriff's cold case detail.
In February 2000, the bodies of Harold "Skip" Tillman and his wife, Joni, were found buried in a remote wash in Yucaipa. He was an accountant, and the couple lived in La Canada Flintridge, in northern Los Angeles County.
They were found only because someone walking their dog found the couple's Maltese, Teddy, dead in the wash. The dog was cherished by the couple, down to the pedicures they gave it.
Once sheriff's detectives visited the site, they saw drag marks from the dog that led to what appeared to be a gravesite. Further digging unearthed the bodies.
The case has stuck with the detectives who worked it, and remained a big question mark to friends of the couple. I talked to various people invovled, and went out the site, for a story published this morning.
You'll see that many hours were spent on the case and many leads were tracked. There was conflict in the couple's life, but they related to white-collar litigation, not violence.
"In the world of gangs and drugs, you solve problems like this," said sheriff's Lt. Rick Ells, who worked the case as a homicide detective. "They were country club people. They ran in a different circle."
Cold case investigators are seeking tips. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call sheriff's homicide detectives at 909-387-3589.
