INFORMATION SOUGHT

Share:

Apologies in advance for the brief entry. I've been working on a story about the fatal bear attack in the San Bernardino Mountains, but hope to have more on the shooting death of Lorenzo Coleman later this week.

Meanwhile, police said today that they still have little information on why the 20-year-old Fontana man was shot as he stood outside a West Second Street apartment complex early Tuesday.

Coleman was struck multiple times in the upper body, and later died at the hospital. The San Bernardino police homicide detail did not receive the case until eight hours after the shooting, so detectives were still canvassing the street late Tuesday for possible witnesses.

It wasn't immediately clear why Coleman was in the area. The man had a 2006 conviction for battery and grand theft, and was on probation, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records.

San Bernardino police are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Steve Turner at 909-384-5647 or the department's anonymous tip line at 909-384-5656.

What's the Difference?

Law enforcement agencies make a distinction between homicides and murders:

Homicide: Death at the hands of another; may include criminal killings as well as those ruled accidents or legally justified.
Murder: A criminal homicide as charged in court. Police agencies typically report only this number each year to the FBI for its Uniform Crime Reports.
