Lowell off roster

The Red Sox finally took care of an increasingly obvious bit of business, removing third baseman Mike Lowell from the roster and replacing him with a September call-up player Gil Velazquez.
Lowell started two games, but was 0-for-8, and barely ran when he hit the ball. Nursing a hip injury, he also didn't look like the stellar glove man he usually is, either. He bounced one throw to first, the ball hopping about 20 feet up to Kevin Youkilis to get a runner Sunday night. He also dove awkwardly at Mark Teixeira's hit in the hole, the ball glancing off his glove for a single. Made you wonder if a healthy Lowell would have made the play.
By de-activating him, Boston can't use him if they would advance to the ALCS.
"We all saw it was difficult for him last night," said Manager Terry Francona.
Mark Kotsay replaces him in the lineup at first base, with Youkilis switching to third.
