Chargers quick hits, first quarter

From opening day at Qualcomm, which also happens to be the only home day game the Chargers will play until Nov. 9:

-- C Nick Hardwick and OT Marcus McNeill were inactive today, as expected. Also inactive for San Diego: CB DeJuan Tribble, LB Anthony Waters, WR Craig Davis, TE Kris Wilson and DT Brandon McKinney, along with third quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.

-- Carolina's inactives were WR Rye Robinson, S C.J. Wilson, LB James Anderson, LB Donte Curry, G Mackenzy Bernadeau, DE Hiliee Taylor, OT Frank Omiyale, and third quarterback Matt Moore, the former UCLA and Oregon State player.

-- The first time LaDainian Tomlinson touched the ball, after taking the exhibition season off, he gained 14 yards on a sweep to the right side.

-- The Chargers dodged a bullet early on. Carolina had first and goal at the 6, got to the 1-yard line, but went for it and failed on fourth-and-goal from the 1 when Jake Delhomme's pass for Brad Hoover was broken up in the end zone.

-- Through the first quarter, Shawne Merriman hasn't been involved in a tackle and really hasn't been a factor defensively, although the Panthers have been staying away from his side most of the time. But Delhomme does appear to be picking on Quentin Jammer; most of his completions so far have been to Jammer's side.

-- Score after a quarter: 0-0
