CC Sabathia is a Northern California native and recently did some house-hunting in Southern California. He's won a Cy Young award and has a chance of adding another to his collection this season after a little more than a month serving as the Brewers' ace. When the left-hander is expected to file for free agency this offseason, could he take his talents closer to home? Say, as a Dodger? "I don't know, man," Sabathia said Friday. "I haven't thought about it. Seriously. "I'll cross that road at the end when it comes down to it." Sabathia maintained that his main focus for now is pitching for the Brewers, who beat out the Dodgers in acquiring him in early July and have since seen him go 7-0 with a 1.55 ERA. He heard those reports of him coming close to heading to LA. "It's definitely close to home, but we have a good situation here (in Milwaukee) and have a chance to win a championship," Sabathia said. The Dodgers could very well make a run for him again in the winter, only this time it won't cost them multiple players to get the three-time All-Star with the Indians. It will cost plenty of cash though, as the 28-year-old Sabathia could command something similar to the six-year, $137.5 million deal the Mets gave Johan Santana. Starting pitching is something the Dodgers have spent heavily on in the past two offseasons, as General Manager Ned Colletti signed Jason Schmidt and Hiroki Kuroda to three-year contracts worth a total of more than $82 million. The team is expected to pursue a starter once again, as it could lose Derek Lowe to free agency, has a decision regarding Brad Penny's $9.25 million option after an injury-plagued season, and can't count on production from Schmidt following shoulder surgery. Sabathia, meanwhile, is a Vallejo native who's looking south in shopping around for a new house if not a home stadium. "We'll see if we can find a spot," Sabathia said. "It's still up in the air. We don't know what's going to happen." |
