Izturis Re-Injures Thumb in Angels' Loss

Maicer Izturis appears to be headed for the disabled list after re-injuring his thumb diving for a ball in the ninth inning.

That, however, hardly seems the most painful thing of Wednesday's 10-7, 12-inning defeat.

Francisco Rodriguez blew his fifth save of the season - his fourth at home - and Justin Speier allowed a three-run homer in the 12th as the bullpen allowed seven runs, erasing Ervin Santana's solid start.

Mark Teixeira homered twice, including a game-tying blast off Seattle closer J.J. Putz in the bottom of the ninth after Rodriguez had allowed three runs. Teixeira also homered in the third off Felix Hernandez, his third multi-homer game of the season.

Speier has allowed 11 homers in 49 innings this season, the second-most longballs in his career. He gave up a combined 13 in 2001 between Cleveland and Colorado and also allowed 11 in 2003 with the Rockies.

His ERA is now 5.33, after a 2.88 clip last year and he has to be the highest paid mop-up man in history.

"Justin's been throwing the ball better," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "He took a little step backwards tonight. It was a fastball right down the heart of the plate."
