The Angels just beat the Yankees, 1-0, behind eight superb innings from Ervin Santana, who allowed just five hits while striking out eight. Mark Teixeira, one of two players with a hit off New York starter Sidney Ponson, drew a walk to start the ninth against Mariano Rivera (Teixeira's second of the game) before pinch-runner Reggie Willits went to third on Vladimir Guerrero's single and scored on Torii Hunter's base hit. Hunter pumped his fist as the ball went into center field. Santana's only true trouble in the game came in the fourth inning when he allowed a leadoff single to Bobby Abreu, who stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. But two fly outs got Santana out of it. Santana opened the game with a walk and Derek Jeter singled, but Santana struck out Abreu and Alex Rodriguez before getting Jason Giambi to pop out. |
