In making an extraordinary play, diving up the middle Friday night to fetch a ball that ricocheted off Ervin Santana's hand before throwing out Robinson Cano from his knees, Maicer Izturis may have forced himself to the disabled list. With a splint supporting his left thumb Saturday, Izturis said he sprained the digit when his glove awkwardly hit the ground, but precautionary x-rays were negative. Still, he said he could not grip a bat nor put on a glove. "I felt it right away," said Izturis, hitting .263 and with just two errors at shortstop. "When I got up (Saturday morning) it was swollen." Izturis, who has hit safely in 30 of his past 38 games, won't play today and will have an MRI taken on Monday and Manager Mike Scioscia said there's "a chance" the team will have to put their shortstop on the disabled list. "It's good to rule out a fracture," Scioscia said. "Sprains take time, too. We'll see what happens in the next day or two and make a determination of what we need to do." |
