Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar and Dioner Navarro hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in a span of 12 pitches against Joe Saunders in the second inning in a 13-4 rout, and who were in the middle of the Rays' five-run fifth that knocked the All-Star hopeful out of the game. Saunders lasted just 4 2/3 innings, his shortest start since Sept. 30, 2006, and gave up eight runs on nine hits, skyrocketing his ERA from 2.63 to 3.32. "It's just one of those games I've got to forget about," he said. And, the American League can forget about making the Rays their whipping boys. Tampa Bay has the third-best record in the league. The Rays entered the game with only a dozen wins at Angel Stadium in their existence (1998) and had not won here in their previous eight games under Manager Joe Maddon, the longtime Angel who took over as Tampa Bay's manager in 2006. "Coming here the last couple of years has been difficult," said Maddon, who spent 31 years in the Angels organization. "We have to be able to beat the better teams in their own ballparks. We're not just trying to be a member of the standings, we're trying to be at the top." |
