When the Angels scored their fifth run in the fourth inning Tuesday night, nothing was done, the game wasn't stopped and history wasn't made. It was simply averted. The Angels beat the Mariners 5-4, snapping an embarrassing run of ineptitude. The Angels hadn't scored more than four runs in 13 games - over two weeks, May 18 being the last day they had - but did so with clutch two-out RBI hits from Torii Hunter and Maicer Izturis. The last time the Angels went this long without breaking the four-run barrier was June 7-23, 1999 when they went 14 straight games. "That was exciting for us," said Hunter, who doubled in a run in the first. "I don't think we saw that No. 5 in three weeks. We had a couple of two-out hits today and that felt good, especially against (Erik) Bedard." It was the Angels' 10th win in their past 14 games as they dropped the M's 14 1/2 games behind them in the AL West. Said winning pitcher Joe Saunders, now 9-2, "We're so good as a hitting team, we were bound to break out of it." |
