Dodgers' Schmidt to get more time in the IE?

Jason Schmidt upped his pitch count to 65 in his 3 2/3-inning rehabilitation start Saturday and consistently hit 91 miles per hour on the radar gun with likely only one start remaining before the clock on the 30-day minor league assignment expires.

But Torre believes Schmidt will need more time and game action in order to be ready for major league action. One way the Dodgers could extend the assignment is by reporting that Schmidt was hurt by a comebacker off his calf during the second inning of the game at Inland Empire, though Torre said it was "no big issue."

"We may go into simulation city," Torre said. "We'll see."

Torre also said that one way to work Schmidt back onto the team is by pairing him with 20-year-old rookie Clayton Kershaw, who the Dodgers want to limit in innings pitched.
