The score was 5-2, but the win for a Braves team with the worst road record in baseball by far, was a big deal. And about as unexpected as losing baseball's top hitter, Chipper Jones, to his own batted ball in batting practice after it caromed around the cage and plunked him under his left eye Friday. The injury scratched Jones, who was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange for a CT scan that proved negative and left him day-to-day for the rest of the three-game series. But it didn't slow down the rest of the Braves, who pounded out 15 hits on the way to just their eighth road win in 32 games this season, knocking Angels loser and starter Jon Garland (6-4, 4.13 ERA) out after giving up a dozen hits and all five runs in 5 2/3 innings. Riverside's own Jo-Jo Reyes, from Poly High and RCC, improved to 3-4 (4.42 ERA) by becoming jut the third lefty in the last 16 decisions by southpaws against the Angels, to beat them. The loss drops the Angels (41-27) to 4.5 games ahead of Oakland in the AL West after Oakland beat San Francisco 5-1 and deprived the Angels of tying their best-ever record through 68 games (42-26) set last season. |
