Greg Maddux missed his chance at win No. 350 when Trevor Hoffman blew a 1-0 lead in the ninth. Maddux is trying to become the ninth player with 350 wins. He may also be the last. "The durability factor," Padres manager and former pitcher Bud Black said when asked why 350 may be unapproachable. "Here's a guy that rarely misses a start." Managers protect starters more than in the past, Black noted, watching pitch counts. Bullpens have been specialized to the point that starters aren't usually asked to go more than six innings and quality starts (6 innings, 3 earned runs) are the sign of a good outing, not necessarily a 'W' by the starting pitcher. |
