Jeff Kent in his own words
I’ve just been reading everything on the Internet and the magazines, and you can’t believe half of everything you read. A lot of good talk.
Gentlemen, my frustrations don’t lie with anybody. They lie with wins and losses. You don’t win, and if anybody’s not frustrated, they should not be playing this game. There are no frustrations with players. There are no frustrations with management. You hope to build on your mistakes as players and as an organization, too. Those are the things that are frustrating. You lean back and are complacent, and it is not worth being here.
The McCourts have realized that and obviously made progress in not being complacent and winning. Fans don’t want to go through the motions. Fans want to win, and if you give them anything shy of that, they ought to be (ticked) off. And the team’s players should be as well.
I’ve had long conversations with Frank and understand his passion and desire to win. He comes with some (position) of not wanting to sacrifice the future 'cause he’s got a long-term investment in this organization. But I know his passion and I know he’s not going to just allow things to fester, and by fester, I mean losing. He’s just not going to let that happen. Joe Torre, that’s a big addition to accountability and accountability of your losses. And you watch player moves that have been made to bolster to the team, and you can’t help but get excited.
It was being able to enjoy my family for a time. They’ve lived baseball their whole lives, and my kids are sad to see it go away if it does go away. I have their support, and watching the team’s moves just gained my confidence in making that decision easy to come back.
(About possible retirement after the season): That’ll come at another time and another place. Is that rehearsed enough?
Today’s not such a great day, but putting my uniform on and getting my socks and giving blood, just back to the professional mode... No doubt when I go out there and start running around the bases, my excitement will come back. There’s a passion to play this game. I love to play this game, and I play it with passion and integrity and I don’t make excuses. I’ll be happy to be here, absolutely.
