Pit bull dog killed by sheriff's deputy after attack

An investigation is under way into a dogfight in which a Victorville woman was bitten on both hands, her dog was injured and an aggressive pit bull was shot to death after it attacked a sheriff's deputy trying to intervene, officials said.

San Bernardino County deputies received a report of a dog attack at 3:47 p.m. Thursday in the 16900 block of Jurassic Place.

They found three pit bull dogs attacking the woman's dog, which was lying on the ground, sheriff's spokeswoman Karen Hunt said in a written statement. Initial efforts to break up the fight were unsuccessful. Even after being pepper sprayed, a brown pit bull — the most aggressive of the three — kept returning to attack the injured dog, Hunt said.

While another deputy separated the other dogs, Deputy Anthony Benjamin tried to control the brown pit bull, but it lunged at him, Hunt said. At that point, Benjamin opened fire, killing the animal.

Animal control officials picked up the two remaining pit bulls. The woman's dog was treated for a cut ear and other superficial wounds. The woman was treated at a local hospital for her hand injuries. Her name was not released.

Ownership of the pit bulls was not immediately determined.
