Motorcyclist arrested after chase through Coachella Valley cities

A motorcyclist was arrested today after a high-speed chase through Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs, authorities said.

Anthony Giannotti, 44, of Palm Springs, was booked into the Palm Springs City Jail on suspicion of evading arrest, reckless driving and a parole violation, according to Mitch Spike, of the Palm Springs Police Department.

Giannotti is expected to be arraigned Thursday, Spike said.

The chase began about 9:10 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop a speeding motorcyclist along North Indian Canyon Drive at the wash, which is south of Interstate 10, Spike said. The motorcyclist refused to stop and continued north at speeds of more than 100 mph to Dillon Road, at which point he drove into the desert and lost the pursuing officer, Spike said.

As officers surrounded the area, a resident reported that a man was hiding a motorcycle in the backyard of a home in the 63700 block of Dillon Road, Spike said. Giannotti was arrested inside that home, Spike said.

A minor earthquake rattled the desert and mountains near Cabazon last night, but apparently caused no damage, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials.

"Nothing," Capt. Dean Veik said of emergency calls to the department's dispatch center in Perris. "Apparently it wasn't big enough to shake anybody out of bed."

The magnitude 3.4 temblor struck at 10:39 p.m. Sunday about two miles northeast of Cabazon and nine miles east of Banning, according to U.S. Geological Survey seismographs.

The earthquake came one day a smaller 3.1 magnitude quake that struck at 12:33 p.m. Saturday about five miles south of Idyllwild.

FIRE UPDATE: 1,100+ homes evacuated near Camp Pendleton

A wildfire that began on an explosives training range at Camp Pendleton forced the evacuation today of a military housing area and more than 1,100 homes near the Marine base, military and fire officials said.

The Juliet fire, named for the training range where it started, had grown to more than 1,500 acres by nightfall and was burning southwest on the base toward the city of Oceanside, said Yvette Urrea Moe, a spokeswoman for San Diego County Office of Emergency Services. No containment was reported by 9 p.m.

An unknown number of families were evacuated by military police from houses threatened by the fire, said Marine 2nd Lt. Riley Whaling.

San Diego County's reverse 911 telephone system ordered the evacuation of 1,025 homes in Oceanside, Moe said. Sheriff's deputies went door-to-door and ordered another 100 homes evacuated.

Marine Sgt. Darhonda Rodela, a base spokeswoman, said the American Red Cross set up a shelter on the base for families affected by the fire. She did not know how many families were evacuated from a portion of the base's San Luis Rey housing area.

Outside the base, evacuees were being sent to shelters set up at El Camino High School and Oceanside High School, said Jane McVey, a spokeswoman for the city of Oceanside.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started shortly after 3 p.m., but Whaling said it started in the training area. He did not know whether the range was being used at the time.

Camp Pendleton brush trucks, similar to fire trucks, were joined by county, state and federal firefighting agencies.

Carlsbad Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Davis told the North County Times that his agency and others lined more than 20 fire engines along the border of the base in case flames or embers carried by the wind blew into the city.

Horses kept in a stable on the base near where the fire was burning were turned loose after workers were forced by military police to evacuate, Heather Gallaher, told the newspaper.

"We have stray horses running down the middle of the road," she said. "The fire is basically right at the barn."

A second, unrelated fire was burning on the base in another training area, Whaling said. No buildings were threatened by that fire.

Missing Pennsylvania man found in the Cabazon area

A Pennsylvania man was found unharmed Saturday after a daylong search prompted by the discovery of his car in the Cabazon area.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies found the car in the wash at Hallsgrade Road at 9:49 a.m. Thursday. It belonged to 33-year-old Ian Terry Moran, of Williamsport, whose family reported him missing Oct. 4.

Police conducted a search-and-rescue mission on the ground and in the air Thursday and Friday with no results. Authorities stopped the search Friday night and were set to resume Saturday, but Moran was located Saturday morning at The Country Store on Main Street in Cabazon.

Moran told deputies he had been camping in the area. He was thirsty and hungry but otherwise appeared to be in good health, according to a sheriff's news release.

FIRE UPDATE: Sparks from I-215 blaze set buildings afire in SB

A brush fire alongside Interstate 215 is throwing up sparks that have set buildings blocks away on fire in the city of San Bernardino. The freeway has also been closed in both directions for the second time Monday.

City fire spokesman Steve Tracey says sustained winds are stoking the blaze, which began spreading in the freeway median around 5 p.m. Monday. It was not immediately clear whether the fire was the same one that started in the morning and forced the freeway to close for hours.

On Monday night, the fire burned 11 blocks along the freeway into a residential and commercial area.

Tracey says a public storage building and another commercial building are still burning.

The first reported fire started in a homeless camp and tore through brush and palm trees along the freeway. A homeless man has been arrested for allegedly starting the blaze with cigarette butts.

Banning police arrest suspect in assault case

A 21-year-old man suspected of striking three people with a vehicle and shooting at another following a fight at a social club has been arrested by Banning police, authorities said today.

Emmanuel Espinoza Jr. was arrested Sunday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, exhibition of a loaded firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, conspiracy and for an alleged probation violation, police said.

Last month, Espinoza was convicted of grand theft and was sentenced to three years probation, according to court records. A charge of burglary was dropped.

On Sunday, Banning police were called to the Club Latino, at 401 E. Livingston St., in Banning, to investigate the report of an assault.

Police determined that Espinoza and alleged accomplice Jesus Manuel Nunez Jr., 27, had gotten involved in a fight with people having a private party at the club, according to Devon Parr, detective secretary for Banning police.

Following the fight, Espinoza allegedly used his vehicle to hit three people, pinning them between a fence and his vehicle, authorities said. One victim suffered a broken arm and two others suffered bruising, police said.

He tried to shoot another person but the pistol jammed, police said.

Espinoza and Nunez drove from the scene but were immediately caught by police.

Motorists began bailing off the freeway as flames spread and northbound traffic is now at a standstill. There are unconfirmed reports of structures on fire.
