Ball security

A critical aspect of the Chargers offensive game plan Sunday will be holding onto the football, since Chicago’s defense led the league in takeaways last year.

“They had 44 takeaways last year,” Philip Rivers said. “That’s an amazing number, and then (they were) only plus-8 in turnover margin because of how many they gave away.

“So that’s obviously going to be a big part of the game. It always is, and this game, with both defenses the way they get after people, and then offensively, we both have the ability to make big plays. The team who can take care of the ball and the field position battle, that’s probably what it’s going to boil down to.”
