First round makes sense

The Chargers selected WR Craig Davis, the second LSU receiver taken in the first round (Dwayne Bowe was picked earlier). Sportingnews.com says Davis is a playmaker but lacks consistency; he has good measurables (6-foot-1 3/8, 207 pounds, 4.44 speed in the 40-yard dash according to ESPN.com). If Davis can showcase his speed well in San Diego, then he gives the Chargers a nice weapon on the outside to complement L.T. and Antonio Gates.
Two other teams of interest to SoCal fans got defensive, at least early on. San Francisco's selection of LB Patrick Willis and the Rams' pick of DE/DT Adam Carriker looks smart in a division loaded at running back (Frank Gore, Shaun Alexander, Steven Jackson and Edgerrin James).
The Niners might be giving Gore some more running room in adding Joe Staley with the 28th pick via a trade with New England. The offensive tackle played at a small school in Central Michigan, but Mel Kiper had been hyping him as a possibility in the middle of the first round.
