Add Funny Money 101

My previous blog inspired me to try to find a breakdown of one of the recent contracts as an example.

If a 10-minute Google News search is any indication, there isn't a lot thorough journalism going on right now with NFL free agency. Everyone is on top of the signings, for sure, but few, if any, have full contract breakdowns and what cap impact each contract is having on the respective teams. ...

But I did find a partially reported contract for offensive lineman Leonard Davis, who got stupid money from the Cowboys in the form of $50 mil over 7 years.

It's reported that he is getting $18.75 in guarantees, broken down in the form of a $16 million signing bonus and a first-year base salary of $2.75 million.

So, divide the bonus by seven (spreading it over the life of the contract) and add the base and, if I've got this right, Davis will count $5.0357 million against the Cowboys $109 million cap.

So, while the reported numbers and the team-record signing bonus are turning heads for an underachieving O-lineman, the cap number is comparatively manageable.
