The Eagles: A review

The Eagles may not be the flashiest band around. The members don't wear sparkly outfits or play a million covers. They don't have giant stage props escaping into the Indio night.

But they are a solid, tight group producing a sonically wonderul show.

The harmonies, made famous with the band's California country rock, may have sounded even better in the night air at the Empire Polo Field in Indio.

The band's only misstep was opening with four songs off "Long Road to Eden," with each primary member (Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit) taking vocals on one track. The audience clapped politely, but the crowd response was tepid at best until a trumpet played gave way to a video background of a sunset and palm trees and the opening guitar notes of "Hotel California."

Then it was a parade of hits, sounding at least as good as they do on that old vinyl copy of "Greatest Hits (1971-1975)", if not better.

Throughout the night, the band played classics such as "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Heartache Tonight," "Life In the Fast Lane," and pretty much every other song that made the Eagles one of the best-selling bands of all time.

The band didn't provide a dynamic stage presence, save for Walsh, but they sounded incredible.

Walsh and Henley each took turns doing solo songs, which were well-received by the crowd, but the biggest cheers were for the band's big hits.

The encore included "Take It Easy" and a rousing version of "Desperado."

The band kicked off the festival in classy fashion, and they didn't need anything but themselves.
