Out and about Inland style: forest fiesta, hopping the beach train

It's going to be a tad warm this weekend, but heading to the beach or the mountains is always a good option.

And with high gas prices you can always jump on the beach train and go down to San Clemente or Oceanside.

The Press-Enterprise/Jason Fritz
Casey Hull and her son Brenden, of Riverside, rode the Metrolink beach train for a day at the beach in San Clemente in this 2006 photo.

On Saturday, you can check out the annual Forest Festival in the San Bernardino Mountains in Blue Jay near Lake Arrowhead.

And it's National Get Outdoors Day at the Big Bear Discovery Center on Saturday. The event is aimed at encouraging healthy, active outdoor fun with activities for the whole family. Most events are free but there are some fees for kayak and canoe tours, gold panning and birdhouse kit building.

Saturday night, you can join an astronomy club for a Moon Party at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands to see the egg-shaped moon and Saturn.

Also Saturday night is the Stop the Towers Hootenanny in Pioneertown.

And just a note, that summer day camp begins Monday at the San Bernardino County Museum. Two sessions, one starting July 7, the other July 28, will focus on the diversity of animal life in the urban environment.

And some weekend reading:

The Mojave National Preserve made the top five noisiest parks.

And shark populations in the Mediterranean Sea are collapsing.

For your calender, REI in Rancho Cucamonga will host the Green Living Project Lecture Series on Monday night. The series will promote current corporate sustainability programs, educate customers on sustainability issues, and entertain them on adventure travel to Africa.
