The weather should be all-around nice in the I.E. this weekend so get out and about, and enjoy it. It's International Migratory Day on Saturday, a day to think about the animal kindgom's frequent fliers and the journey they take between their summer and winter homes. That said, the local Audubon chapter is hosting a trip to the new preserve in Whitewater Canyon that's run by the Wildlands Conservancy. They say the riparian and desert scrub habitat at the preserve should be teeming with birds, such as summer tanagers and brown-crested flycatchers. Migrants, they say, should be easy to find. I've been to the preserve a few times in the last few months and it's really a stunning transformation from what was a trout farm. On Saturday, you can bring the kids and learn about water at the third annual Splash Festival in Corona on Saturday. Saturday also happens to be National Astronomy Day. So pull out those telescopes. Or you can join the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers at 7 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands to view Saturn and the first-quarter moon. Guest speaker James Butts, solar system ambassador for NASA/JPL, will talk about current space missions within the solar system. And there will be a lecture on museums Sunday at one of our Inland museums. Kind of reminds me of a college class I took, the history of history. Turned out to be a great class. Anyhow, the lecture is entitled "Museums are a Mindset." As for me, I'll be hiking up to the Cucamonga wilderness this weekend with a group from Orange County. I've been a little sick this week so wish me luck. For your calendar later this week, you can learn all about what it takes to climb Mt. Whitney at a free clinic at REI on Wednesday. My friends and I didn't get our permit for this summer, but we're still trying to figure out a back way to get to the peak that doesn't require one. And if you want to brave the I-10 going west after work on Thursday, Frank McManamon, chief archaeologist for the National Park Service, will talk at the Getty Center in Los Angeles about the role of the agency in protecting cultural resources at a wide variety of locations, from archaeological sites, world heritage sites, and sites with great spiritual meaning to museum collections and historic structures. And Thursday is Bike-to-Work Day. Is anyone going to partake, especially given the high prices of gas? |
