Out and about Inland style: Reptiles, Earth Fair and the outdoors

Be mindful of the hot, dry weather that's on tap this weekend and stay well hydrated.

If you're going to be outside, why not head to the cooler mountains, where the Idyllwild Earth Fair will be taking place Saturday. It's the 19th annual event.

But the event's featured talk is tonight at 7:30 p.m. featuring Richard Norris of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He'll speak on "The Future of California Waters: Living with Global Change."

Story continues below

The Press-Enterprise/Mark Zaleski

It's National Endangered Species Day today and here's one of the imperiled species in the Inland region. We saw this Peninsular bighorn sheep in the mountains above Palm Desert in 2005.

And you can learn all about tortoises, lizards and geckos at Reptile Mania on Saturday at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. Dr. Sean Bush, snakebite specialist who works at Loma Linda University Medical Center and stars in TV's "The Venom ER," will give a 1 p.m. presentation. The event is free with museum admission.

REI in Rancho Cucamonga is hosting an Introduction to the Outdoors on Saturday, aimed at getting families recreating outdoors. They'll have camping clinics, orienteering for kids, geocaching and more.

And it's that time of year again for the Solar Cup. Check out the Inland high school teams that have entered the annual competition at Lake Skinner that starts today and runs through the weekend.

And today is National Bike-To-Work-Day, which ironically in our area could cut air pollution if everyone straddled a bike, but with this heat sparking up the ozone it's not really the best idea for anyone with asthma to be out there pedaling.

And it's also National Endangered Species Day today, and here in the Inland region with have a bevy of plants and animals that are on the federal endangered species list, including the Peninsular bighorn sheep pictured here.

And a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail through the San Jacinto Wilderness is opening up again on Saturday after it was closed late last month because of the Apache Fire. A one-mile stretch was damaged, but forest officials say it is now safe for foot and equestrian traffic.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the 19th annual Idyllwild Earth Fair a fantastic event!

But the fun doesn't stop there! This coming Memorial Day weekend we'll be having a yard sale to raise funds and cover the costs of Earth Fair.

We hope you'll come by on Saturday and/or Sunday and exercise your recycling muscles by finding some long lost treasures to purchase while helping to support one of Idyllwild's community events!

8am - 2pm (No early birds please!)
