Marking up Inland wilderness

The House Natural Resources Committee marked up a slew of bills this morning proposing wilderness areas, including one focusing on the Inland region.

They ended up quickly passing that bill, HR 3682, better known as the California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act. The bill authored by U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, is looking to designate 191,000 acres across Riverside County as wilderness, as a scenic river, or as land that would expand the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.

Bono Mack recently talked to the Press-Enterprise about how some of her law-making colleagues don't understand the compromises she made in order to deal with fire danger and recreation in Riverside County. You can read the story here.

Jon Owen, with the Campaign for America's Wilderness, said the bill sailed smoothly through, with some minor boundary adjustments on wilderness areas. Next up is a vote before the full House of Representatives. Stay tuned.

Anyone have thoughts on wilderness and how stringent its characteristics should be?
