Out and about

Two bald eagles (could they be George and Gracie?) take in the view from on top of a pine tree at Eagles Point in Big Bear Lake in a 2005 photo. (Mark Zaleski/The Press-Enterprise)

It's going to be a cold, wet weekend in the Inland region. I imagine we're going to get another healthy dosing of snow in the mountains. At least one of our ski resorts expects to open tomorrow. The snow is also good for the drought as it will melt and flow into creeks and aquifers. But, most water managers would probably say, it's too soon to tell how much of a dent these December storms will make, and with such a dry winter last year, the area needs several storms throughout the winter.

I went up the Palm Springs Tramway earlier this week for a hike in the San Jacinto Mountains and was surprised to see just how much snow was still there from the storm four days earlier. It was quite the winter wonderland.

And speaking of snow, REI in Rancho Cucamonga will host a free class on snowshoeing this Wednesday. Check out the details here.

And it's about that time of year when the annual bald eagle counts start around our Inland mountain lakes. Mark your calendars for Dec. 15 if you want to participate in the census of the birds that make their winter homes here. No experience needed. Just bring binoculars, a watch and dress warmly. If you are doing any shopping this weekend, and you've heard all this stuff about lead in toys, you can click here to find out how to tell which ones have lead.
